World Book Day

How wonderful did the children look yesterday? As you know, part of our celebrations for World Book Day included dressing up, as voted for by children. It was fantastic to see so many children, and staff, around the school dressed as some of the most popular fictional characters from the world of literature. We saw a huge array of characters from books by Harry Potter, Roald Dahl and David Walliams, to name just a few. Disney characters such as Ariel, Elsa and Belle and Princess Jasmine were also in school alongside Spiderman, Superman and Where's Wally. Also this year, we introduced children coming to school representing a word and saw a number of 'active' children in sportsgear, as well as multi-coloured outfits representing all colours of the 'rainbow'. Rover the Dog even made an appearance and chose the prize winners in each class.

A huge thank you to you as parents for supporting us.

Reading, of course, was the theme and the children took part in various fun and creative reading and writing opportunities to really promote a love of books and of reading not just for pleasure but also for a purpose. Children read not only with their classmates but with children in different classes. They were given an opportunity to share and read various books.

Thank you to all of you that donated used books for the Darwen Rotary to send to children in Gambia. If you haven't had time to do this yet, don't worry you can still send them in on Monday.

Following on from having celebrated World Book Day this week, it is a good opportunity to remind you that our school library is open every Tuesday and Thursday after school, 3.15-3.45 pm. Please call into school with your son/daughter and have a look through our books.

Friends of Avondale

Faced with shrinking budgets and increasing demands on resources an active Parents' Association is incredibly important in a school. Our group – Friends of Avondale – needs new members. So, if you have some time to spare and you want to help raise monies for your children/the school please get in touch. You can contact directly on friendsofavondale@avondale.blackburn.sch.uk or call the school office on 703449.

The Friends have helped the school tremendously over the years. More recently, they contributed to the cost of the new sound system and new lighting in the Hall. They also helped with the purchase of books and other items for the Reading Den.

The Friends will be setting up a Pop up Mothers’ Day shop on Tuesday 17 March, 1.00 – 3.15 pm. The children will be invited, by class, to go and purchase an item to give on Mothering Sunday to a loved one. The children will choose an item so that the gift will be a surprise but will hopefully save you going out and buying a gift too, as well as being cost effective. Items will be priced from £1.00 - £4.00. Further details to follow.

Out of School Clubs

You are now able to book places for both Breakfast and After School Clubs via School Money. Bookings for sessions from Monday 20 April through to Friday 17 July are now online. Bookings will close on Friday 27 March. If you experience any difficulty logging onto School Money or making bookings, please contact the school office on 703449 or email outofschoolclubs@avondale.blackburn.sch.uk

Exciting news to come, the school has established a Public Speaking Team. Well done to Abigail, Ruby and Declan from Year 6 for representing the school at our first meeting at Wensley Fold earlier this week. We look forward to Borough competitions in June.
