The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald

“The Great Gatsby” is very popular book that was made into a movie and had a remake. Written by F. Scott Fitzgerald it is set in Long Island’s North Shore and New York City during the summer of 1922. The novel shows an era that Fitzgerald himself named the “Jazz Era.”

Nick Carraway is one of the main characters in the novel as well as the narrator. Nick is a young man from Minnesota who is next-door neighbors with Jay Gatsby and is trying to help Gatsby with Daisy Buchanan who is Nick’s cousin. Jay Gatsby is the main character in this novel. Gatsby is a very wealthy man who lives next to Nick Carraway on West Egg, which is a fictional place of Long Island. Nick views Gatsby as a deeply flawed man but says his power to transform his dreams into reality make him “great.” Daisy Buchanan is Nick Carraway’s cousin and the girl that Gatsby loves. She fell in love with Gatsby before the war and promised to wait for him, but instead she has a deep need to be loved and married a man named Tom Buchanan who lives across the bay that Gatsby lives on.

In the novel “The Great Gatsby” Jay Gatsby is trying to get back together with Daisy Buchanan who he fell in love with before the war. Nick Carraway, who is Daisy’s cousin and Gatsby’s neighbor, is trying to help Gatsby get her back. However, Daisy has married a wealthy man named Tom Buchanan in the time Gatsby was fighting in the war. Nick end up inviting Daisy to his house and also invites Gatsby over to help them reconnect. They end up falling in love again and throughout the book, they are sneaking around behind Tom’s back.

The main theme of “The Great Gatsby” is obtaining the American dream. Most of the characters in the book including Gatsby, Tom, and Daisy are all looking for wealth and power. Tom is one of the only characters who is not obsessed with obtaining wealth and power. This novel also has many other themes including love, money, social class, violence, and honesty. The moral of the novel is that a romantic illusion cannot survive when pitted against reality. Gatsby was trying to bring back what him and Daisy had using his power and it only ended up getting him killed.

“The Great Gatsby” is a very good book and I would recommend it to anybody who is looking for a great book to read. This book gives so many life lessons that anyone who reads it could learn something important about life.
