1..2..3..Boom! By: Grace Wiltsey

Many people know when you mix both Diet Coke and Mentos a explosion happens. So, what would be cooler than doing the Diet Coke and Mentos experiment in a volcano. But what people don't know is why the explosion happens. They also don't know if only Diet Coke can cause this type of reaction to happen. The Diet Coke and Mentos reaction happens because Mentos have thousands of small pores, which causes bubble growth sites. So, that means a ton of carbon dioxide bubbles rapidly form on Mentos. The buoyancy and size of the bubbles will eventually cause them to rise to the top of the Diet Coke bottle creating a mini geyser.

Diet Sodas work a lot better in this experiment because an ingredient called aspartame lowers the surface tension better than sugar. Also, if you use Mentos that don't have the pores the reaction will be a lot smaller. Another factor that decides how big the reaction will be is how fast the object creating the reaction sinks. Mentos are good because they are very dense. Temperature also is a factor. The higher the temperature of the Diet Coke, the larger the reaction.

This reaction is an acid-base reaction. Which means that two things an acid and a base react to make something happen that is very different than what you would expect. In this case, the Diet Coke is the acid, and the Mentos are the base. An acid is something that has a pH of 0-7, is sour, and reacts with metals. A base is something that has a pH of 7-14, is bitter, and doesn't react with metals. The pH of an item is the level of acidity it has. If an item has a pH of 7 it is considered neutral. Every food or drink has a pH level.

  2. Making the Volcano-
  3. Make the paper mache recipe.
  4. Put the paper mache on the volcano.
  5. Let in dry for a few days.
  6. Paint the volcano.
  7. Doing the Experiment-
  8. Set out some Mentos.
  9. Take the Diet Coke bottle out of the Volcano.
  10. Twist the cap halfway open.
  11. Put the Diet Coke bottle back in the Volcano.
  12. Open the Diet Coke bottle all the way.
  13. Watch the reaction.
