Instructions:

  1. In your groups of 4, read the sources and classify them into whether they are political, economic, or cultural connections.
  2. Using your sources, come up with the definition of what is mean by "political", "economic", and "cultural" connections.
Connections usually do not take place independent of one another - they are often interlinked.

Trade across Time & Cultures

  • Trade: Buying and Selling/Exchange of goods or services
  • Barter: Exchange of goods or services for other goods or services without the use of currencies.

Instructions

1. Number off yourselves from 1-4 in your groups of 4

2. Number 1 will read up on traders in the Middle East (p52); Number 2 on China (p53), Number 3 on India (p54) and Number 4 on South East Asia (p55)

  • When were these traders active in Asia?
  • What were their modes of transportation?
  • What were the commodities traded?

3. Fill in your findings on page 2 of the handout

4. Share your findings with your fellow group members in the order from 1-4.
