2017 Longwood Softball Preview: Pitching Longwood Returns entire pitching staff for 2017 season

Longwood returns its full four-player pitching staff for the 2017 season. Led by senior Biz McCarthy and sophomore Sydney Gay, the Lancers boast a pitching staff that finished 2016 among the top 25 in the NCAA with a 2.29 team ERA.

Longwood's four pitchers -- Biz McCarthy, Sydney Gay, Sydney Mundell and Jenna Carnes -- set Longwood's program record with 366 strikeouts a season ago.
Biz McCarthy

Back-to-back Big South Pitcher of the Year Biz McCarthy enjoyed another stellar season in the circle for the Lancers in 2016, going 19-10 with a 2.53 ERA. Throughout the season, McCarthy notched 180 strikeouts, fourth all-time in single season K's at Longwood. In addition, she became the second pitcher at Longwood to record at least 500 strikeouts in her career, joining Briana Wells.

The 2017 Big South Preseason Pitcher of the Year, McCarthy heads into her final season looking to cement her spot among Longwood's and the Big South's all-time great pitchers. The reigning two-time Big South Pitcher of the Year, McCarthy opens the 2017 season 45 strikeouts from Longwood's all-time career strikeout record. In addition, she's primed to finish her career in the top 10 in Big South history in wins and strikeouts.
Sydney Gay

Coming off a phenomenal freshman season that saw her earn second-team All-Big South accolades, Sydney Gay looks to replicate her success in 2017. After a season in which Gay burst onto the scene in 2016, going 20-8 in the circle and leading the Big South with a 1.93 ERA. As a rookie, Gay tied for 10th on Longwood's all-time charts in single season victories and was fifth in program history in single season strikeouts. In addition, the Carrollton, Va., product ranked inside the top-10 among rookies in the NCAA with her 1.93 ERA

The Big South Tournament MVP, Gay won six of the seven games that Longwood earned victories in throughout the Big South and NCAA Tournament. In the postseason, Gay went 6-2 with a 1.40 ERA in 45.0 innings of work. In the Big South Tournament alone, Gay was 4-0 in five appearances and didn't give up a single run throughout the tournament while striking 24 batters and allowing opponents to hit .131. She pitched a one-hit shutout in Longwood's 10-0 run-rule win over Campbell in the championship game.
Sydney Mundell

After transferring into the program from UNLV prior to the 2016 season, Sydney Mundell was used as a relief pitcher for the Lancers.

A product of Valencia, Calif., Mundell fanned nine batters in just 12.1 innings and gives Longwood head coach Kathy Riley another option to go to in games. The right-handed pitcher made 10 appearances out of the bullpen, finishing with a 2.27 ERA and giving up just four earned runs throughout the season.
Jenna Carnes

Jenna Carnes heads into her senior campaign in 2017 as Longwood's most-experienced pitcher. A product of Six Mile, S.C., Carnes has won six games throughout her three years with a 5.40 ERA.

Carnes is coming off a junior season where she posted a 1-1 record with a 3.29 ERA in nine appearances, three starts. She tossed 17.0 innings, including a season-high five innings in Longwood's win over Hartford.
