All Saints CE Primary School MARCH Newsletter 2020

Collective Worship

This month we have begun to think about Wisdom and Compassion as part of the build up towards Lent.

We talked about putting ourselves in someone else's shoes and "treating others as we would wish to be treated ourselves". A pair of pink sparkly shoes and some great acting has helped us to remember to be more compassionate around school! The Open the Book team have also been in to tell us the story of Samuel.

Oak class led an excellent class assembly on Lent last Friday, retelling the story of Jesus in the Wilderness and helping us to think about what we might give up or give back for Lent. The children read and presented their work beautifully clearly, sang fabulously and we received lots of positive comments from visitors. Well done Oak Class!

40 Acts

During Lent we started to think about ways that we could give back something and not just give up something. 40 Acts is a worldwide movement which encourages us to do this and the theme this year is "Give Generously". Below is the full 40 Acts which could encourage children to help others and do what is right- there is a challenge for each day.

Governors' Corner

At All Saints we are very lucky to have a dedicated team of governors who support our school in many ways. In order to get to know them and their many jobs better, the pupils at All Saints have begun to interview our lovely governors. This month, we interviewed Mrs Janet Gaten who is one of our Foundation Governors.

Interview conducted and written by Adam, Blaize, Nylah and Grace.

What is the best bit about being a governor? It is seeing the whole school and everything that is going on. I love seeing the children happy!

What is the worst bit about being a governor? People can sometimes be upset and children and adults might be worried. It is hard to see people sad but it doesn't happen often.

Why did you become a governor? When I had children I wanted to help the school and this seemed like a good way to do it.

What do you do when you're not being a governor? I like nature and spending time with my grandchildren.

Fun facts about Mrs Gaten: her favourite food is Mac and Cheese! She likes "Phish Food" ice cream and anything nutty and chocolate. Mrs Gaten loves rugby best!

Thank you to Mrs Gaten for her time

TWYCROSS ZOO

On Wednesday 26th February, years 1 and 2 enjoyed a windy but wonderful trip to Twycross Zoo. The children were very excited to see the animals, especially the Giraffes, Tigers and Rhino! Thankfully, the sun came out for us, bringing the animals out with it and we were able to see all the different animals in their enclosures. We also enjoyed a special lesson with one of the Zookeepers, explaining all about the different types of diets and why different animals need different types of teeth. We then learnt about food chains and got the chance to meet two of their special friends - a tortoise and a cockroach! Thank you very much to all the parents who came with us - we needed quite a large team of helpers and are so grateful to you all for giving up your time and being such fabulous help on the day! The following day, the children did some wonderful writing about their trip, using their real life experience to inspire them.

Well done Ash, Oak and Maple!

Race for Life

On May 7th we will be holding a Race for Life on school grounds to raise money for Cancer Research. We are really looking forward to this whole school event! Look out for more information and the all important sponsorship forms!

JUST A REMINDER

On Thursday 5th March we will be celebrating World Book Day. We have lots of lovely activities planned for the day and invite the children to dress up as their favourite character from a book.

Our classes are running some themes if you would like to join in with these when dressing up.

EYFS have been looking at Noah's Ark and lots of different animals- this will be their theme.

Year 1/2 are working around the theme of Julia Donaldson's books.

Year 3/4 are doing some activities with Mrs Smith (a new member of staff) who cowrote the Hattie B, Magical Vet series.

Year 5/6 are working around the theme of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

If you would like to get involved, we are looking for parents who would like to come and be a reading role model. If you would like to come in and read a story to the class or a small group- please get in touch. We would love to have you!

CROSS COUNTRY

On Saturday 29th February, Milo in year 4 made it to the Local Area finals at Prestwold Hall. He had previously come 3rd overall, leading him to take part in Saturday's event. The weather made conditions really tough and we are very proud to say that despite this, he managed to come 70th overall in the county! An incredible achievement- well done Milo!

Choir Spectacular

Some of our year 5 and 6s have been practising hard for the Choir Spectacular show which they will be performing in at the end of the month- beautiful singing!

Parent Consultation

As a result of the government releasing new guidance for the teaching of Relationships and Sex Education (SRE) in schools, we need to rethink our approach to teaching about this subject area at All Saints. We would really value your contribution as parents so would like to invite you to a consultation morning in school. This will be a chance for you to hear what this guidance is suggesting and to share with us your views and thoughts about the content of an SRE curriculum.

The session will be led by Miss Prokipczuk, Mrs Palmer and a small number of governors and will take place on Friday 6th March from 9.00am until approximately 10.30am.

If you are unable to be there, but wish to share your thoughts then please write to us or email us at school.

Message from Beat the Street…

Please remember to take care when going around the village, please be respectful to the local residents and be aware of your speed and road safety at all times.

SCIENCE OPEN MORNING

27.2.2020

We would like to thank all family members who came along to our recent Science Open Mornings at both schools. Just over 100 people turned up and all the staff and pupils really enjoyed working closely with family members on a variety of great science experiments. These included EYFS children making cardboard boats, Year 3-4 children testing friction, Year 5s looking at the impacts of salt on ice and Years 6s exploring a variety of experiments and testing materials. If you want any examples of experiments to work with your children at home, look for 'Kitchen Science' online - we can recommend the Science Museum's ideas, but there are lots of videos and information packs out there. If you would like any more information, please email science@asasps.org and we will do our best to answer!

Messy Cathedral does Science Week!

Messy Cathedral does Science Week at Leicester Cathedral - 7th March 11am-1pm. It falls within National Science Week so we are hosting a very special Science theme Messy Cathedral – as ever there will be mess, fun, activities to take part in, crafts to make and take home, friendship and food! (we are also in the season at the Cathedral that is titled “Salt of the earth” so think of a cheeky lunch that goes well with salt on it!) This is a FREE event!

It will be so good to see you there! Go to Eventbrite for FREE tickets or follow this link to book.

Celebration Assembly- Friday 27th March

This half term, we would like to try something new with Celebration Assemblies on a Friday morning.

We know that lots of our children have a number of successes outside of school and we would love to celebrate them with you!

If your child has recently recieved an award, certificate or trophy for something outside of school, they are invited to bring it in and share it with us. For example, this could be a "man of the match" trophy, a swimming certificate, a newspaper cutting or a dance medal. Please bring in anything you wish to share by WEDNESDAY 25th March you would like to join us. You will then receive a slip confirming your invitation for Celebration Assembly at 9:15am on FRIDAY 27th March .

Please call in at the office if you have any questions- we can't wait to celebrate with you!

LUNCHTIME SUPERVISORS

We sometimes need extra cover at lunchtimes out on our playgrounds and in the dinner hall. If you think you would be interested in this sort of casual work then please get in touch with the office! Your duties would include supervising children while they eat and play, facilitating games and supporting children in line with our positive behaviour policy. You would also need to consent to a full police check and provide us with references, to enable us to gain a DBS for you.

School Food with Educaterers

Our new menu is going down really well!

So far the dinners have been much better since the menu has changed. Especially the mashed potato and chicken wrap with bbq sauce. The mousse was tasty as well. Lilly says that the school dinners have been really good and it's better because we have plates instead of trays. The salad bar is great because you get to choose what you want, Imogen says she loves that she can have sweetcorn! Evie says that she loves the flavoured water and it's great because you can help yourself. Overall, we think that the new menu is brilliant!

ADVANCE WARNING

Please look out for letters in school bags regarding Parent Pay and selecting school dinners in advance. This system will begin on the 16th March. Please note- we will NOT be able to accept cash or cheques in school after this date.

Parking Concerns

We are still receiving a large number of concerns and complaints regarding parking and safe driving during our peak times. You may have noticed a police presence at during these times over the last couple of weeks and this is due to the growing concerns over children's safety. We are now in discussions with police, local council and the Highways Agency so that we can try and ensure that our school remains a safe place for all.

We ask that all parents and carers think about being considerate to others and ensure they are parking/stopping in sensible places which are not causing an obstruction to other vehicles, pavements, drive ways or on the zigzags. Where possible, we would encourage families to walk, bike or scoot to school- we have plenty of space in our bike/scooter racks!
