- Courtney Ellzey doubled down the left-field line for a walkoff RBI in the seventh inning to send Mobile (Ala) to a 3-2 victory over Oregon Tech in the opening game of the World Series. It was her third hit of the game.
- Emily Fleetwood scored the winning run for the seventh-seeded Rams after walking and then stealing second base. Fleetwood also ended the last two Oregon Tech at-bats with two-out diving catches in left field.
- Fleetwood’s infield hit knocked in pinch runner Amberly Montgomery for the game’s first run in the fifth inning.
News and Notes
- Oregon Tech responded to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning when Cierra Barkis lined a two-run double after a double by Ali Graham and a walk to Dre Sotelo. It was Graham’s 20th double of the season the RBIs gave Barkis 52 for the season in 58 games.
- Barkis had two of Oregon Tech’s four hits
- Mobile tied it at 2 in the bottom of the sixth when Pullin lined a hit into right field to score Elzey.
- The victory was the seventh in a row and 15th in the last 17 games for Mobile (54-11), which advances to a game against second-seeded Marian (Ind.) at 2 p.m. Friday.
- Tenth-seeded Oregon Tech (43-16) plays in a loser’s bracket game at 9:30 p.m. Friday.
- The game started seven hours after the originally scheduled 10 a.m. because of heavy rains the night before in Springfield, Mo.
News and Notes
- Tori Robinson slammed a home run to left field in the top of the sixth inning Thursday night to give Georgia Gwinnett a 2-1 victory over Vanguard.
- Two-out singles by Mia Palomino and Cassie Balswick put the tying run at second for the Lions, but a sharp liner was snagged by left-fielder Piper Wagner to end the game
- Wagner scored the Grizzlies’ other run in the second inning on an RBI flyball by Aubree Cox. Wagner had drawn a walk and advanced on a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt.
- Vanguard took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Tatiana Tabizon drove in Emily Hall, who had a one-out hit and advanced with the help of a Grizzlies error.
New and Notes
- Both teams stranded seven runners on base
- Taylor Hansis picked up her 25th win of the season while allowing no earned runs for the Grizzlies. She struck out five and walked only one. Vanessa Dwyer struck out four in taking the loss. She is now 22-5.
- The 10th-seeded Grizzlies rose to 43-14 and earned a matchup on Friday with top-seeded Science and Arts (Okla.) at 4:30 p.m.. The Drovers are 56-2 and both losses were by 1-0 scores.
- The Drovers won the national title in 2018, defeating Georgia Gwinnett 4-1 in a second-round game.
- The No. 9-seeded Lions fell to 46-12. They play in a loser’s bracket game at 7 p.m. Friday in the double-elimination national tournament.
