Remember the Titans

The September installment of the 2019 Innovation & Cinema series leaves it all on the field with the heart-tugging blend of sports and drama in “Remember the Titans.”

Set in 1971 Virginia, this is a true story of a newly integrated high school and the African-American coach (Denzel Washington) appointed to bring its football team together. More than a tale of sportsmanship, “Remember the Titans” also shows the team’s touching impact on its community.

“Doors” will open at 6:30 pm with popcorn and additional food for purchase from Camel City Grill. Please note the movie will begin approximately one hour later.

Parking is available in the Link Apartments Parking Deck, located at 530 N. Patterson Ave. Innovation & Cinema is presented in partnership with a/perture cinema.

The Hispanic League’s Fiesta is an annual celebration of Latinx heritage in the Triad. Fiesta features Central and South American food, dance, music, crafts, and more in a day-long festival. The Hispanic League strives to promote community diversity and inclusion, so all are welcome!

A group will be leaving the Academy at 10:45 am to go to the festivities. Click the button below to sign up to attend!

Honoring our Diversity Fall Program

Diversity Fall Program recognizes girls’ varied cultural, ethnic, and racial backgrounds emphasizing positive identity and alliance building. This program includes discussions and activities that cover topics such as “Stereotype Busting,“ “Beyond Fear,“ “Cultural Treasures,“ “Culture Clash,“ and incorporates a community advocacy exercise. Themes focus on appreciating diversity in girls lives by identifying biases, developing navigational tools in a multi-cultural society, and promoting understanding and respect within and between groups. Girls will journal for weekly reflection.

Flor de Toloache

UNCSA Presents all-female mariachi band Flor de Toloache as part of the American Music Series.

Flor de Toloache has a unique flavor and sound, offering an edgy, versatile and fresh take on traditional Mexican music. Winners of a Latin Grammy Award for Best Ranchero Band, they have illuminated world renowned stages in Europe and India. As the opening act of Black Keys’ singer Dan Auerbach’s new band, The Arcs, they played to sold out audiences in the UK, Germany, Holland, Italy and France.

In the U.S., they’ve captivated crowds at legendary venues including Terminal 5 in New York, Nashville’s Ryman Theater at The Grand Ole Opry and the Coachella Festival. The group’s live performances have been praised by Rolling Stone, Billboard Magazine, The New Yorker, GQ Magazine and the New York Times. Following a highly praised “Tiny Desk Concert,” their collaboration with The Arcs landed them on the “Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” and BBC 2’s “Later with Jools Holland.”

The Winston-Salem Foundation is hosting screenings of the documentary series America to Me by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Steve James. Set in one of Chicago's most racially diverse public schools, America to Me examines the role that race and class play in American education.

In each screening, we'll watch a different episode from the series, and the subsequent discussion will connect the content back to our own community. Free and open to the public. Feel free to attend as many as you can!

International Peace Day is celebrated every year on September 21. Salem Academy is making Pinwheels for Peace to prepare for this observance, and will post our pinwheels on campus to show support for peace for our community and around the globe. The above link will tell you more about the Pinwheels.

Academy students are invited to drop by the Counseling Office Rooms (beside Ms. Johnson's office) during Conference period this Wednesday to make pinwheels. Celebrating our 5th Year Anniversary in the City of Winston Salem, bringing an increasing fashion awareness to the city. Winston Salem Fashion Week is regarded as one of the premier events in the Triad since launching in 2015. Winston Salem Fashion Week is a multicultural community event that provides an opportunity for, but not exclusive to, local designers, artists and professionals in the apparel industry (as well as sponsoring business owners and partners) to showcase their collections and talents while expanding their brands.

The theme for this year's showcase is all about Transformation.

Focusing and celebrating the achievements and accomplished history of the City of Winston Salem; transforming into technology, and expanding in the Arts Culture. The runway showcase will reflect the energy and electricity of that transformation! 2019 will feature 13 designers that will present their Fall/Winter or Spring/Summer Collections on the runway by professional models. Local retailers will introduce the looks for 2019 Fall/Winter or Spring/Summer 2020.

Come prepared to shop their pop up shops, as well as from some of the Triads high-end boutiques and retailers in the Vendors Gallery.

  • Discussion: The Economic Benefits of the Fashion Industry and Social Sustainable Practices in Your Local Fashion Industry (Free). Location: ACCESS Center
  • Urban Chic & Street Style Showcase (Free): Celebrating Champion's 100th Year in Apparel. Featuring urban, hip hop, streetwear from Champion and 4 amazing local designers. Come prepared for an energetic hype evening of runway fashion in the Historical RJ Reynolds Bailey Park Coal Pit, 445 Patterson Avenue, 27101. This showcase is open to the public.
  • Students General Admission ($20): General Admission for Saturday, September 28 or Sunday, September 29 Showcase. Student must be actively enrolled in College, High School, Middle School. Must present valid Student ID at Check In. Please Note: If you do not present a valid student ID, you will not be admitted into the showcase and NO REFUNDS.

Looking to explore? Then the Raleigh Day trip is just the activity for you! Saturday, September 21, Academy students will be visiting local spots in the city of Raleigh. For Saturday evening, St. Mary's School is hosting a hypnotist event and other fun activities on their campus. St. Mary's will provide dinner and additional treats for the activities. Students are encouraged to bring money for this activity.

Activities include Raleigh shopping, pizza dinner, and Hypnotist event/games with other boarding schools at St. Mary's School.

The first two-generational LEAD Girls Expo that will enable more young girls and their parents a connection with the fundamentals that can prepare girls for the social, emotional and academic challenges of high school. Together we will LEAD the next generation!

The Expo will feature a full day of high-energy workshops and inspiring presentations led by influential women from our community. Parents/Guardians of participants will have the opportunity to learn practical tips for high-school readiness, making education a priority at home, and how to encourage their daughters’ social and emotional development.

The highlights of the day’s workshop and presentation activities include:
  • Morning Kick-Off Keynote with Chief of Police Catrina Thompson
  • “Building a Resilient Daughter” presentation and moderated panel discussion for parents
  • Five breakout session workshops for girls, focused on Awareness, Perspective, Communication and Leadership, led by local experts, including the Leadership & Teamwork workshop facilitated by BB&T

We are extending an invitation to the Rising Expo to 9th and 10th graders. We still have space and scholarships available! Preregistration is required, no registration will take place on the day of the event.
