Vanlommel is an organization which was founded in 1952 by Louis Vanlommel. Today the Belgian company is still in hands of the family. It is nice to know that all four of Louis' grandchildren share the same passion, since they are all active in the business together with their parents.

Quality by supply chain

In order to guarantee quality veal Vanlommel finds it crucial to control every single step of the production cycle. Therefore Vanlommel masters the next activities so no details can be forgotten:

WE PRODUCE OUR GMP+ FEED

Vanlommel’s Dutch subsidiary Verveka is the producer of the feed. Verveka delivers specialized and controlled feed worldwide. Thanks to the acquisition of the company in 2009, Vanlommel can draw on more than four decades of experience − and fully integrate that experience in its own supply chain.

WE CAREFULLY SELECT OUR LIVESTOCK

Offering quality veal is only possible when the selection of the new born calves is carefully done. To define the potential of each animal, Vanlommel has a specialized team at their disposal to buy and resell the new born calves. Thanks to their expertise, they can carefully evaluate the quality required to meet the diverse needs of our customers.

CALF REARING

Stables, nutrition, supervision, transport: Vanlommel tracks the calves closely. Thus, the monitoring process begins well before processing the veal. Vanlommel monitors the growth of each calf closely: while the veal farmer is rearing the calves, he receives a weekly visit from a Vanlommel supervisor. In addition, veterinarians also visit regularly to verify the condition of the animals.

TRANSPORT OF LIVESTOCK

The calves are kept at locations throughout Belgium and the Netherlands. For reasons of animal welfare during transport, the distance between the stables and the slaughterhouse is restricted. Thanks to this short distance between stables and slaughterhouse, the transport distance can be minimized and, consequently, the animals’ welfare is maximized.

As a major player in the sector, Vanlommel wants to play a pioneering role in enhancing animal welfare. In consultation with its customers, Vanlommel has issued various specifications in which animal welfare is primary: thus, in the Well and Fair specification, important extra-legal rules have been applied that are also audited by an independent party. Vanlommel has taken responsible measures in the process of rearing calves as well as in the slaughterhouse.

Vanlommel has one of the most modern and efficient slaughterhouses in Europe. Everything is done at one location: not only the slaughtering, but also the butchering of the different cuts, and the loading of the veal for transport. Thanks to this all-in-one principle, all quality controls are conducted in optimal conditions.

Origin, cut, packaging, model: Vanlommel works on demand for each of its customers (retailers, wholesalers, butchers,…) − be it carcasses or packaging for the consumer, the specialists personally select the meat that satisfies the customer’s expectations. This customization is only possible in a flexible, modern and efficient environment in which traceability and control are crucial at each stage.

TRANSPORT OF FRESH MEAT

Vanlommel’s transport is not only an extra service, but also an extra guarantee of quality. Performed by own employees with own refrigerated trucks (or by certified transporters who work under the same conditions), transport is the last link in the fully monitored supply chain.
