The Divine: A Play for Sarah Bernhardt By: Josephine St-Cyr

The Spatial Experience

Walking to the Constans Theatre, my first thoughts were that the building would be like every other building on campus. To my surprise, when I walked inside and seen the decorations hanging from the ceiling, I was amazed at what I saw. Taking a seat in the middle of auditorium was a great idea. I was able to sit close enough to see the small details and movements of the actors but far enough to see the overall scene. The actors walked through the crowd and were right in front me so that was awesome. By having the lights dimed in a small auditorium, it gave a more realistic atmosphere. The feelings was if we were apart of the play itself. The role of place in the Good Life is that you should be somewhere that makes you happy and will give you the most satisfaction.

The Social Experience

I attended the performance with my friend Christian( shown in the picture). To be prepared for the performance, we did a little researching to get a synopsis of what the play was going to be about. At first, we were a little angry because when arriving to the auditorium, we seen that the play was two and a half hours. But after the performance, our opinion had completely changed. Going to see the play with a friend was a great idea. We were able to talk about what we liked and dislike. For example, I did not like how the owner of the shoe factory was nonchalant about children working at the factory. Christian's view was that the owner was only caring about his self- interest. The role shared experience plays in the Good Life is that you should want to experience the good things in life with those who are close with. Getting feedback and different viewpoints on certain things are very essential.

The Cultural and Intellectual Experience

As I stated before, I did a little research to what the main idea of the play. While watching the play, I felt like I could relate to it on a personal level. My mom worked a lot to make sure that her kids were taken care of. She did not have enough money to find a babysitter for me so my bigger sister would sometimes stay home from school to watch after me. This play has also helped me realized that sometimes we may get distracted by things that we think are the "good life." These thing may actually not be the best situation for us, which may cause consequences.

The Emotional Experience

The opportunity where the play provide us an opportunity for katharsis is when the young seminarian that was sexually and emotionally abused by a minister for many years. It shows how that had an impact on his life by holding back this secret. When the secret came out, he had the option to go to the police to tell them or rip up the paper. He chose to rip up the paper. My opinion is that he just wanted to let go of the nasty past and move on to bigger and better things. I know this subject is sensitive in the real world so I think the play opened up the idea and opinions to the those who have suffered from any type of abuse.
