How are Rubber Band Cars made?

Rubber band cars are made out of cardboard, duct tape, elastic band, and a skewer. Below is a picture of our first car with no modifications.

What types of modifications did we make?

Above is a picture of our first car with no modifications. Below is a picture of our car with all of its modifications. The modifications were an elastic band around both wheels, duct tape that goes in between the wheels and the skewer, a skewer that drags behind the car, and an elastic ban that attaches from the skewer to the other skewer. All four of these modifications really helped are car speed and acceleration. After all of these modifications are the distance our car went doubled.

How far did our car go?

The furthest our car went was 44 feet, but on average it went around 38ft.

Velocity and Acceleration

To figure out the velocity of our car we used Video Physics. We took the video from the side so we could see the car from start to finish. We then put a meter stick on the ground so we could gauge the distance once we filmed the video. When we finished filming we used the app to put dots on where the car was at the time we stopped the video. Then we would move the video forward pause it again and put a dot where the car was. After we finished putting the dots on the video we told the app where the meter stick started and ended so we could see how long the car went and how fast it went. Then the app put it into a graph using the formula below to calculate the velocity.

The velocity of the car started off at a velocity of 0 and then slowly increased to a velocity of 5.5 meters in 10 seconds before our velocity peaked at 7 meters in 14 seconds.

To figure out the acceleration of our car we used the previous graph of velocity. We chose two points. One point is when the car made it 4 meters in 9 seconds and the other point is where the car made it 2 meters in 6 seconds. We then plugged the points into the velocity formula where we subtracted 2 from 4 to get a numerator of 2. Then we subtracted 6 from 9 to get us a denominator of 3. This told us that the cars acceleration was 2/3 meters per second.
