The Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is a horse race for three year old throroughbreds. It takes place the first weekend in May each year at Churchill Downs racetrack.

The race is a little over 1 mile long and lasts about two minutes.

Twenty horses run in the race each year.

The people who ride in the derby are called jockeys.

Jockeys wear special colorful clothing called "silks" when they ride in the Derby.

Silks have stripes, dots, and other fancy patterns.

The horse that runs the fastest is the winner!

The winning rider gets a trophy and the horse wears a blanket of roses.

The blanket of roses is made at Kroger in Louisville, KY.

People who go to the Derby wear funny, fancy hats!

Some hats have flowers.

Some hats even have horses on them!
