Celebrating the Life of Martin Luther King Jr. - Find a Service Event Near You!

Monday, January 18 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day; Schools and Offices Closed

As we prepare to commemorate the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, January 18, we encourage everyone to take this opportunity to dive deeper into the many causes Dr. King championed.

Observed each year on the third Monday in January as “a day on, not a day off,” Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. Red Clay schools and offices will be closed on the holiday.

Here are some events that are happening around the Red Clay community...

Participate in the Presidential Inaugural Committee’s MLK Day of Service event hosted by Kind to Kids Foundation, Matt Meyer, County Executive, and the New Castle County Government on January 18 at Shue-Medill Middle School (1500 Capitol Trail, Newark, DE 19711) from 2 to 4 PM. Drop off any of the following new items: teddy bears and stuffed animals, coloring books and crayons, small fleece blankets, and hats and gloves. Social distancing and face masks are required.

Take part in West Side Grows Together's 9th Annual MLK Clean-up, Peace March and Virtual Celebration on January 18 from 10 AM to 5 PM. This year's theme is "Healing through Unity." Masks, social distancing and registration are required. This program is partially funded by a grant from the Delaware Humanities, a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The program is also partially funded with the support of the Delaware Art Museum.

Important Health Reminders for In-Person Learning

Student and staff health and safety are our top priorities. With many students and staff members back in person for Red Clay on Campus, we are asking everyone to do their part in helping to ensure a safe and healthy school environment for students and staff.

Please continue to review and follow these 5 health reminders before sending your child to school every day.

Where to Pick Up School Meals Next Week

Meals will be available to students in the evening from 5 PM to 6 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays at several locations across Red Clay. Meals are available to all children, 18 and under, free of charge and may continue to be picked up by a parent/guardian or child.

If you need help finding the closest site to you, please call Red Clay's nutrition services team at 302.992.5580.

Red Clay Nurses Participate in New Castle County Vaccination Event

On January 12 Red Clay nurses participated in a countywide COVID-19 vaccination event for school nurses and first responders. Nearly 1,000 people received the vaccine, including 270 school nurses.

In addition to receiving the vaccine, Michelle Bridge, RN, school nurse at the Red Clay Early Years Program at Richardson Park Elementary School, Mandy Pennington, BSN, RN, Supervisor of Health Services, and Sharon Rose-Gargula, school nurse at Stanton Middle School, stepped up to help administer the vaccine to nurses and first responders at the event in Delaware City.
