Rochester NY – The Monroe CC Tribunes (5 – 2) men’s lacrosse team made it a five straight game winning streak. Sophomore Hudson Weil (Williamsville East) was the leading scorer for Monroe CC with five goals and one assist against Jefferson CC on Saturday. Sophomore Dave Lehman (Webster Schroeder) led the way with three goals against Herkimer CC on Sunday.
The Tribunes opened the scoring six minutes into the game with Lehman scoring on a great feed from Sophomore Jake Moss (Wayne). After a goal by Jefferson, Freshman Austin Jobson scored to give the lead back to the Tribunes. Weil scored another goal (assisted by Jake Moss) before the end of the quarter, making the score 3 to 1 after the first quarter. Monroe scored four goals in the second and Jefferson got two in the quarter including a fast break goal with less than a minute left in the half to cut the Tribunes led to four, heading into halftime, 7-3.
The Tribunes defensive was able to shut out Jefferson CC including playing man-down for almost three minutes in the third quarter. Goalie Mark Campbell made seven saves in the third quarter (15 on the day). The defense played great and were led by Freshmen Trevor Knoepfler (Webster Thomas), Matt Kegler (Spencerport), Santana Deada (Wayne), Cody Matteson (Wayne) and Sophomores Ryan Boadway (Bloomfield) and Cole Crawford (Wayne). Each were major contributors to keeping the Cannoneers off the board.
With the defense keeping Jefferson CC off the board, the Tribunes used a huge offensive attack to put the game out of hand. The Tribunes were able to score five goals including two goals by Moss and Weil. Both of Weil’s goals came with less than a minute left in the quarter.
Monroe was able to score three more goals in the fourth quarter to bring the final score: 15 to 3. Lehman finished with two goals and two assists, sophomore Jake Moss (Wayne) scored three goals and had two assists. Freshman Nick Kallio (Livonia) scored one goal and had three assists, Austin Jobson scored two goals and one assist and Patrick Brewer (Haverling) scored two goals.
On Sunday, Monroe CC hosted the Herkimer Generals. The Tribunes came out firing after Saturday’s game. Less than two minutes into the game, the Tribunes were on the score board with a great look from Jobson to Lehman for score and the Tribunes 1 - 0 lead. Monroe got five more goals that quarter and the Generals scored one to bring the score 6 to 1 at the end of one.
Each team only scored one goal in the second. The Tribunes got a goal from Lehman (assisted by Weil) with five seconds left in the second quarter. The half time score was 7 to 2.
The second half was a defensive battle as each team was not able to get on the scoreboard.
The Tribunes were able to get on the scoreboard first in the fourth quarter. Lehman scored the goal for Monroe (feed from Moss) to bring the Tribunes led to four goals but the Generals quickly answered with a goal for their own to bring the score 8 to 3. The Tribunes answered four minutes later with another goal from Weil. Then Herkimer was able to score a goal two minutes later and then scored one more with three minutes left in the game. The Tribunes were able to keep the Generals off the scoreboard after their fifth goal, to win the game 9 to 5.
Freshman Mark Campbell (Waterloo) had ten saves against the Generals.
Lehman scored three goals. Weil had two goals. Kallio (Livonia) had one assist, Jobson had two goals and one assist, and Patrick Brewer scored two goals.
Sophomore Richard Sacchetti (Hilton) led the Tribunes with seventeen face wins and nine ground balls on Saturday against Jefferson CC. He came back on Sunday and won another fourteen face-offs against the Generals and picked up twelve ground balls.
Boadway led the day with three take-aways and five ground balls against the Generals.
The Tribunes head to Mercyhurst North East for a 4pm showdown on Wednesday and host #1 Onondaga CC Saturday, April 15th for a 1:00 pm start.
