Natural Resources

The Natural Resources in Colonial New England were whale oil, trees, fur, and fish. Whale oil was used to light candles. The trees are used to build houses and ships.

REASONS FOR FOUNDING

The reason for founding the New England colonies was that the Puritans wanted religious freedom, and a tolerant place to live. The Puritans believed that wearing colorful clothing meant that a person was trying to standout, and brag and so they wore all black and white and led modest, peaceful lives. The Puritans believed in hard work from dusk until dawn. Church attendance was mandatory.

Land

The land in New England was heavily forested, and had a rocky coastline and soil rocky. The rocky soil made farming difficult near the coastline, but was much better along the rivers. New England had a lot of trees that were used to build ships and homes.

Climate

  • In New England the winters were very cold and harsh. During the cold winters of New England, diseases spread easily.

Industries

The colonist of New England worked in industries such as fishing, cutting trees, whaling, building houses, and ship building.

Religion

The Colonist of New England were mostly Puritans.

The Puritans that landed in New England in 1620 were later called Pilgrims.
