Thesis: Shakespeare was important because of his plays, his life, his influence on theater and his company


Quote 1 :"By 1592, Shakespeare apparently attracted the hostile attention of a jealous rival. Robert Greene was a university-trained writer who was among the first to attempt to make a career of writing for the stage and the commercial press"(Lander).

Commentary : This shows that other playwrights were threatened by him. Even people didn't like him he still prospered

Quote 2 :."He issued a royal license to Shakespeare and his fellow players, which allowed the company to call itself the King’s Men"(Lander)

Commentary : Shakespeare's plays were that well known the new king made him his company of actors. This just goes to show how grand Shakespeare was at writing and acting out plays.

Quote 3:"During these years, he wrote several comedies and almost all the tragedies that have made him famous. Shakespeare’s masterpieces during this period include the comedies Much Ado About Nothing and Twelfth Night; the history Henry V;and the tragedies Antony and Cleopatra, Hamlet, Julius Caesar, King Lear, Macbeth, and Othello"(Lander)

Commentary : Even today we still use these plays.His plays were so impressive that they have been carried on for hundreds of years.

Quote 4 : "During his last eight years, Shakespeare was the sole author of only three plays—Cymbeline,The Tempest, and The Winter’s Tale" ( Lander)

Commentary: His company trusted him so much they let him write three plays all by himself. Those plays he wrote are still popular today.

His Life

Quote 1 : "people saw little point in recording the lives of mere dramatists. However, a number of records exist that deal with Shakespeare’s life(Lander)".

Commentary : He was that important that he has many records about his life. He thought it was a good idea to have records about him because every poets didn't have records. That helped use today understand his work.

Quote 2 : "William Shakespeare was born in the small market town of Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, the third of eight children " (Lander).

Commentary : This shows that even if you were born in a small town you still can be noticed and go far in life. He became successful even though his mom and dad had seven other children they wanted the best for him

Quote 3 : "Beginning at about the age of 7, William probably attended the Stratford grammar school with other boys of his social class. The school’s highly qualified teachers were graduates of Oxford University. Students spent about nine hours a day in school(Lander)".

Commentary His parents wanted the best for him, so they sent him to school. He had the best of teachers the town could offer graduates of Oxford University.

Quote 4 : " At the age of eighteen he married Anne Hathaway, who was eight years older than he was. Sometime after the birth of their second and third children, Shakespeare moved to London apparently leaving his family in Stratford"(Robert Anderson).

Commentary During his life plays and acting was more important than family. When he left his family he wrote some of the most popular plays even today.

His Work in Theater

Quote 1 "The Lord Chamberlain’s Men were one of the most popular companies in London. In large part because of Shakespeare’s talents, they would go on to become the dominant" (Lander).

Commentary Shakespeare was so good at what he did he joined the best realty. As soon as he joined the group became the dominant group in London.

Quote 2 "His work has also had an important effect on the literary cultures of such countries as Germany and Russia. In addition, his widespread presence in popular culture extends to motion pictures, television, cartoons, and even songs" (Lander).

Commentary Shakespeare had such big impact on the world it has helped shape the language today. This quote shows the importance of shakespeare by saying his techniques are used in cartoons and songs etc.

Quote 3 " During much of this period, Shakespeare ranked as London’s most popular playwright, based on the number of times his plays were performed and published"(Lander).

Commentary He was that good of a writer he became more famous and wealthy as time went by. Even today he is still ranked one of the best writers in the world.

His Company

Quote 1 "Royal Shakespeare Company is an English theater organization dedicated to presenting the plays of William Shakespeare and other playwrights of his time, modern classical dramas, and new works"( royal shakespeare company)

Commentary He got tired of renting theaters so he and a couple others decided to make one. Some of his greatests plays were performed.
