The Istituto Professionale di Stato per i Servizi Enogastronomici e dell’Ospitalità Alberghiera (I.P.S.S.E.O.A) “Karol Wojtyla” has always been involved in visits and exchanges with many different countries in order to promote the study of foreign languages and contact with different cultures, traditions, customs, and even new technological approaches in teaching and learning.

The new challenging Erasmus+ project, entitled Spielend Neues Lernen, aims to exchange information and good practices in teaching foreign languages, German and English or any other foreign language, using online games and quizzes.

Five schools are involved in the project; besides I.P.S.S.E.O.A. Karol Wojtyla, the other four schools are:

Ramazan Atil Anadolu Lisesi – Adana, Turkey

Zakladna skola, Wolkerova v Bardejove Slovakia

12th Gymnasium Acharnon – Acharnes, Greece

Zespół Szkół w Wieleniu, Poland

The first transnational meeting has taken place in Adana, Turkey on November 6-10, 2017.

During the meeting, the teachers representing the different schools have given information about their schools and they have attended a training course on the use of technology in teaching foreign languages to develop materials to use in teaching German and English to the students involved in the project.

The teachers from Greece, Stavrula Valkanou and Eftichia Chroni; Italy, Anna Chiarenza and Misael Mongiovì; Poland, Agnieszka Chabzda and Izabela Chmurak; Slovakia, Soňa Sosenková and Janka Roháľová, have been warmingly welcomed by the Head-teacher Hikmet Okur, Sebla Döner, teacher of German and coordinator of the project, Sebhattin Güven, teacher of English, and all the staff and students of the Ramazan Atil Anadolu Lisesi in Adana.

Just from the beginning the foreign teachers and the Turkish students had to play a game divided into teams. It was a nice way to get to know the students and the school.

The meeting was not only characterized by and training, but the participants also had the opportunity to visit Adana and its market as well as Cappadocia and the breath-taking Fairy Chimneys. The food was always delicious!

We left Adana feeling that we had met new friends but aware that we were going to meet again in Catania in April.

The second project meeting was held in Catania on 16th – 20th April 2018.

It was an exchange meeting. Eighteen students, twelve teachers and one Head Teacher from the different countries taking part in the project visited our school and our city.

The teachers from Greece, Stavrula Valkanou, Eftichia Chroni and Anna Mavropanou; Poland, Agnieszka Chabzda and Izabela Chmurak; Slovakia, Soňa Sosenková, Janka Roháľová and Jozef Dunčák – Deputy Head Teacher; Turkey, Hikmet Okur-Head teacher, Sebla Döner, Sebahattin Güven and Ali Nadir Şener and all the students have been warmingly welcomed by the Head-teacher Daniela Di Piazza and the Italian teachers Anna Chiarenza and Misael Mongiovì.

During the week the students, grouped into international teams, had to take quizzes and create new ones helped by the German and English teachers that were participating in the meeting. At the end of the week, the best teams received a prize.

Trips: Taormina, Siracusa Mount Etna

The meeting offered also the opportunity to visit Catania and the neighbouring cities of Taormina and Siracusa, as well as the highest volcano in Europe, Mount Etna. The international guests also had the opportunity to taste the typical Sicilian Food cooked by the school chefs and students. The meeting strengthened the cooperative bond between the teachers, the students, the hosting families, and the schools.
