Background
- Commonly know as Confucius, full name was Kong Qiu
- Born in 551 BC, in the Lu state of China
- At the age of 3, he lost his father and was raised by his mother under difficult financial conditions
- At the age of 23, he mourned the death of his mother for 3 years because of tradition
- Chinese teacher, editor, politician, and philosopher
- Existed during a time of ideological crisis in China
Achievements & Legacy
- First teacher in China whose aim was to make education available for all people
- At first was the "Minister of Crime" in the Lu state
- Believed that each person should maintain the decorum of their position
- Founded Ru, a school that inevitably lead to the idea of Confucianism
- Known for the concept of "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
Political & Economic Impact
- Wanted a centralized government in China
- Believed that the best government is one that governs through people's morality and their rites
- Did not believe in the concept of "democracy"
- Supported the idea of a government ruled by a virtuous king
- Confucianism helped to influence what China's culture is today
