History at Whitkirk Primary School 2021

At Whitkirk Primary School, we are Historians! We want our children to develop a love of history and to grow up with ambitions to become archaeologists, museum curators or archivists. We believe History should inspire children’s curiosity about the past and stimulate an interest into how elements of the past have impacted our lives today.

Our curriculum exposes children to interesting, diverse and relevant enquiry led History themes, giving a broad a balanced view of the History of Britain and that of the wider world. Through careful sequencing of these themes, pupils develop a chronological framework that enables them to make sense of new knowledge they acquire. Our school’s own rich history, within the context of our local area, is built into these themes. Providing opportunities for children to explore local history and heritage is integral to our curriculum as it allows children to look at what was happening in their local area and then move from the ‘local’ to the ‘national’ and often onto global events.

In order to become a successful Historian, we recognise the importance of fully immersing our children in all areas of the subject. High quality texts are chosen which link with History themes throughout the year. School trips are provided to give first hand experiences, which enhance children’s understanding of the past. Cross curricular opportunities are planned in throughout the year to ensure children make links between History and other areas of the curriculum, e.g. the link between time and place. Through this multi-layered approach, we aim for all children to embed knowledge and master new knowledge and skills in a range of contexts.
