State of the Race
This year's crop of Outstanding Motion Picture nominees include several films centered around real life individuals (Judas and the Black Messiah, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, The United States vs. Billie Holiday and One Night in Miami). We've seen in the past several films these films do extremely well in nominations specially in the Outstanding Motion Picture race (The Hurricane, Ray, Cadillac Records, Straight Outta Compton and most recently, Dolemite is My Name).
Pixar's Soul is poised to become only the second animated film after The Princess and the Frog (nominee, 2010) to be nominated in this category.
Spike Lee, who currently holds the record for the most individual Black Reel Award nominations, also has a strong track record in getting his films nominated for Outstanding Motion Picture. In the last 20 years, 7 films that he's produced and/or directed earned an Outstanding Motion Picture nomination. Lee's film, Da 5 Bloods will more than likely become his 8th film to be nominated in this category.
After taking home their first Outstanding Motion Picture prize last year for Dolemite is My Name, Netflix is looking to continue their dominance with potential top contending films, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, Malcolm & Marie and Da 5 Bloods meanwhile, other streaming services are also looking to breakthrough in this category include Amazon (One Night in Miami), HBO Max (Warner Bros' Judas and the Black Messiah & The Little Things) , Disney+ (Pixar's Soul) and Apple TV+ (The Banker)
