Headshots How to look and feel your best in front of the camera

A great professional headshot helps you communicate in one second who you are and what you do.

Professional headshots are the new first impression. I know it sounds crazy, but in this highly driven social media, on-line world, our on-line presence is an extension of our brand and we have exactly 2 seconds to grab (or lose) our potential client's attention. Our goal is for people to trust you and want to sit down and grab a cup of coffee to find out more about who you are and how you can help them. So how do you achieve that? That's where the help of professionals come in. Below are some suggestions on what to wear and how to look and feel your best in front of the camera.

What color looks best ?

Please understand that any color can work if you like wearing it. Why should you wear colors you love? Because you'll be most comfortable in those colors and this translates to engaging more with the camera, which leads to a more successful shoot and ultimately images you will love. Now, all that being said, let's get a little more in depth.

Dark, rich colors tend to pop more off the backdrop (regardless of indoor or outdoor). Shy away from using white and other pastel colors like a soft yellow or pale pink.

Complimentary Colors Pop More For women, I often recommend adding pops of color with your accessories. (belts, scarves, jewelry) For men, a tie or a patterned sports jacket can definitely add to the dimension of your images. (See images below)

Style and Fit

For Women:  Avoid collars that stand up. Crew, boat or narrow v-necks are flattering and lay nicely. They also easily pair up with accessories should you choose to add them. Also, make sure your clothes fit well. Generally, a little snug is better than baggy and loose. Avoid short sleeves or sleeveless styles, low neck lines ,busy or bold patterns or shiny fabrics — no silk or satin. For Men: If you’re going business casual (i.e, no tie), a sport coat paired with a collared shirt is a great choice. A suit coat without a tie is NOT recommended. If you are wearing a suit coat, it is best to pair with a collared shirt and tie. Make sure your clothes fit well. This is especially important for men’s collars, sports coats and suit jackets. Make sure to look for gaps around your neck.

Accessories and Eyeglasses

Less is more. Keep jewelry to a minimum. Big earrings can be distracting. Stay away from large hoops or large dangling earrings. Stud earrings are best. Statement pieces can be fun and add personality to your images. Bring several along and I will help you choose the best one for your shoot. Eyeglasses. If you normally wear glasses, plan to wear them for your picture.
