Welcome to Ring Patterns, the Colliesonline.com feature in which we re-cap, month by month, the general achievements of the breed at specialties and all-breeds throughout the country. In September 2019, at the all-breed shows, collies were awarded one Best In Show – GCH Kiriko's Rock Star, one Reserve Best In Show – GCHS Qualteri Lazurite Island Tryst, two Best Owner-handled in Show – GCHB Swan's Grand Jete' Of Tercan and CH Riverwind's Mystery Solved and one Reserve Best Owner-handled in Show – GCHB Heatherfield Legacy Of Love.

On September 14 at Bonneville Basin Kennel Association in Farmington, Utah, GCHS Qualteri Lazurite Island Tryst was awarded Reserve Best In Show under Eva Berg. There were 653 dogs in competition.

There were 42 Herding Group placements, which is the most placements during a month for collies any month this year, so far, and 40 National Owner-handled Series placements. There were four Group 1s awarded in September to Collies; one for the smooth dog, GCHS Qualteri Lazurite Island Tryst in Utah, two for the rough dog, GCH Kiriko's Rock Star in New York and one for the rough dog, GCHB Valley Park Serendipity At Baldwin Ridge, FDC, CGCA, CGCU, TKN in California. The judges who selected the collie as the top herding dog of the day were: Robert Shreve, Nancy Eilks, Carmen Battaglia and Steven Keating.

A total of 22 collies recorded placements in July – 6 roughs and 16 smooths. The placements included 13 Group 2s, nine Group 3s, and 16 Group 4s. Of all the placements, the Rough Variety came away with a ribbon 14 times compared to 28 for the Smooth Variety.

GCHG Scalloway's Lion Hunter was awarded three Group placements this month under judges Charles Trotter, Dana Cline and Michael Woods.

GCHB Zandria 'N Tercan's Kiss My Freckles was awarded a Group 4 in Oregon under judge Steve Keating.

The Wine Circuit in upstate New York hosted the largest entries in the Herding Group with more than 200 each day. The largest number of herding dogs shown at a show in which a collie placed was 214 at Onondaga Kennel Association in Romulus, New York. The award was a Group 4 and it went to the smooth dog, GCHG Travler Sugarnspice Witches Do Come Blue. The Herding Group judge was Kimberly Meredith, who has been judging collies since September 2006.

GCHG Travler Sugarnspice Witches Do Come Blue was awarded five Group placements in September under judges Marjorie Tuff, Raymond Filburn, David Swartwood, Shelley Hennessy and Kimberly Meredith.

Michael Woods was the only Herding Group judge that placed both varieties in the Group on the same day. It was at Brandon Kennel Club of Mississippi in Jackson on September 12 with 74 Herding dogs shown on the day. The rough dog, GCHG Scalloway's Lion Hunter placed third and the smooth dog, GCH Ceilidh's If I Can Dream, placed fourth. Judge Woods was approved to judge the breed in November 1999.

National Owner-handled Series

Besides the two Best Owner-handled in Show awards for GCHB Swan's Grand Jete' Of Tercan and CH Riverwind's Mystery Solved and one Reserve Best Owner-handled in Show for GCHB Heatherfield Legacy Of Love, Herding Group judges placed collies 40 times in the AKC's National Owner-handled Series. The placements included 12 Group 1s, 7 for the Rough Variety and 5 for the Smooth Variety. The smooths took 24 placements and the roughs took 16.

CH Divine's Double Portion, RN, handled by Roxane Jourdain, was awarded an NOHS Group 2 under Judge Nancy Liebes at Panhandle Kennel Club on September 14.
