  • 12noon - Wednesday 12th May
  • 11am - Thursday 13th May
  • 10.30am - Friday 14th May

During this simple and effective technique we will explore the use of natural objects like leaves and learn how to create a beautiful atmospheric image using either pastels (chalk), charcoal or graphite pencils together with a small spot of household cooking oil.

The technique is super simple and gives some interesting results and can be taken further with the use of different coloured media, coloured papers and even painted brush marks.

You will need the following materials for this workshop:

  • A small leaf – a selection would be nice so that you can find which works best for this technique.
  • A chalk pastel (darker colours preferable) or a piece of charcoal. These work best but if you don’t have access to them an ordinary graphite pencil such as a B, 2B, 4B etc. The darker ‘B’ grade would work best.
  • A4 printer paper – the cheaper the better!
  • A sharp knife to scrape the pastel/charcoal/pencil to create a small amount of fine pigment. It needs to be sharp so that you can ‘grate’ the end of your medium to create the powder.
  • A small tsp of cooking oil such as vegetable/olive/coconut etc.
  • A few kitchen towel sheets or similar to use for blotting and smudging.
  • If you have a small paint brush it can be used to coat the leaf with the oil but if you do not, the kitchen towel can also be used to cover the leaf with the oil.
