Smile! Chesapeake academy Kindergarten 2019-20

December in K

Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Mrs. Ritter and Ms Emry brought Oreo treats for everyone!

For you, Mrs. Hayes. A candle we made in class. Kenzie and Weston agree that it smells like crayons. Wonder why! LOL

Walkabout Irvington

Who did we find in Irvington? Our walkabout was possible thanks to Pastor and Mrs. Farmer, Daddy Wessinger, Mama Nichols, Lily's Grammie, Ari's Aunt Penny, The Local and Mama Abbott, Irvington Post Office, and all of our neighbors in Irvington.

Polar Express reading by Sheriff McCrainie

Get your ticket punched.
All aboard!
Can you still hear the bell ring?

Elves at work

A visit from Mrs. Farmer is always a treat!
What could we be doing in each of these snapshots? Ask your K!
Eight graders wrote mathematic story books for kindergarteners. Here we see the eighth graders sharing their books with our Ks.
Thank you CAPPA for hot cocoa, cookies, and Santa!

November

What better snack to have for Pp and Kk week. Pancakes!

Hot Chocolate Anyone?

Did someone say snow?
What do you do on a snowy afternoon? The first snow of the season? Go outside!!!!!

Daily work and stations lead to pride in our learning accomplishments.

Continuing study of the night sky led to constellation discussions and creating an observatory in our classroom.

Grandparents'& Grandfriends' Day 2019

Stations. Work and play with purpose.

Firefighter Visit

Turner Crawford of Henrico Fire Department, friend of Deputy Sheriff Caleb Smith and CA middle school teacher Hilary Smith, joined our Extended Day, Kindergarten, and first graders for an informative and important lesson.

This is how we take the fear out of approaching an authority figure and hero.
How do we investigate the things that are too far away to hold?
Using the telescope. How does this work?
Studying the night sky led us to discussing the moon. That led us to discovering the surface of the moon and how the craters are formed. We further investigated how deeper craters and wider craters are made.

Hello Autumn

Happy Halloween

Thank you to our Room Mamas and all of the Grandmamas, Mamas, and Daddies who helped to make this Halloween a happy and festive one :)
So stinking cute!
Pumpkin math, pumpkin science, pumpkin reading, pumpkin writing.

Pumpkin Week

Pumpkins!

Pie, Pie, me oh my!

Pumpkin pie, anyone?
Using our 5 senses to work :)
Sorry, June, we cannot eat it before it is baked.
Now, have a slice.
I think I like it.
Kenzie gives our pie a thumbs up :)
Can we do this again tomorrow?
It is all a learning process.

It all started with Daddy Edmonds and 3 piglets.

Thank you so much, Violet, for sharing your Daddy and the piglets, and for making Pajama Day that much better (and cuter)!!!!

Coding, algorithms, and robots in Kindergarten? Absolutely

Shannon takes a turn. She chooses a path, writes her algorithm, and codes the bot. Success!
June and Shannon cheer for Kenzie as we watch her algorithm come to life.
Grant send the Beebot from point to point with his coded directions.
Go Noel!
Lily is confident her algorithm will work.
Ty'Ari is coding her emergent reader for a reading lesson. These little books teach so much more than reading. These books introduce and support many concepts like sight word recognition, counting, number words, color words, patience, text progression, number order, sorting, story retelling, use of a staple, and so much more!
Roll and Graph is another fun way for Ks to learn so many things. With just a box of tissues and an imagination they have each made a game to practice skills such as graphing, cutting, gluing, taking turns, shapes, patience, and counting.
BINGO! Phonics bingo = joy in learning.
We can Write The Room. Ask your K about how this writing and reading activity works. They find it exciting and it gets them moving and working :)

Say, "Cheese!"

Picture Day is always a little scary for Ks. If you are unsure of new surroundings and new faces, and you have to keep yourself tucked in and clean...a little freakout is okay. BUT...our class held it all together and looked super!!

Big smile, Grant!
Thank you Steve Kancianac and Joanne from Your's Truly.

Apple Week

See what we can do? Fresh bagels with butter or cream cheese and cinnamon and sugar. We can spread. We can sprinkle. We can try something new.

Apple Pie anyone?

Apple Pie a'la mode. Yummy!
Chef Grant is following our class recipe for a super treat!

Will an apple sink or float? Let's find out.

The red apple floats.
Will the yellow one float?

Ask a K what we found out about apples.

Let's make applesauce.

What do you think, Weston? Applesauce with ice cream is a great treat on a hot afternoon. Especially if you made it yourself.

Let's learn to use the microwave.

Popcorn and red kool aid for red week.

Station work

Happy Knees

Let's Get Going!

We needed to replant our wagon garden, so off to M&M Building Supply we went.
Buckle up, Buttercups.
How do we choose? Everything is so healthy and lovely!
It's Watering Will, ready to read us a story.
Inside for a story in the air conditioning. What a treat on a hot Virginia afternoon!
Our new friends, Morgan and Leigh-Erica had gifts for everyone! What a great surprise :)
We learned that we can make new friends with a smile and kind word.
Back on the bus and buckling back up.
Now we are ready to work in our garden.

K Wagon Garden

It is Picture Day

CHEEEEEESE
Smile big!
Thanks Mr. Kancianac!

It's all in a day of K.

Station Rotation, writing our names, finger gym, exploration and imagination :)

Shannon seems to like the tart, but sweet lemonade. Noel, on the other hand, has other ideas about it :)
We get a big thumbs up from Lily!
It was yellow week. Can you tell? We had cheese and crackers for snack and MADE lemonade , too.
So many teachable moments in a day. Do you see what caught Grant's attention?
Learning new friends' names and faces with a project .
Multi-step projects have multi-functions.
Finding the top left hand corner with a smiley face, writing our names, cutting, gluing, adding magnets, remembering the names of our new friends.

We can do.

Shake a friend's hand, look them in the eye, and say, "Good morning, Friend."
A science experiment! We are studying the color yellow, this week, and our five senses. We added yellow food coloring to salt for a lesson in texture that set us up for an alphabet sensory tray station. We can see the yellow, feel the grains of salt. Do we smell anything? We hear the crunching as we stir. No, we did not taste it :)
That experiment led to a BIG question. "Where does salt come from before it goes to Food Lion in the round container?"

Let's go find out! I would rather show you than just tell you. FIELD TRIP!

So, we put on our rain boots and went down the Nature Trail.

CA Outdoor Classroom
Deer and raccoon tracks. YES! More teachable moments :)
Just walk into the stream. We are prepared for the water and mud! Rain boots :)
getting samples of brackish water
We will use our samples to see the results of evaporation and the traces of salt left behind. All from erosion and the power of water.
Back up the hill we go.
June told Lily, "We should choose the right path and know before we go." What a great listener!! We are learning the 7 rules of the Outdoors Code for Kids. Want to know more? Come to Back to School Night and find out :)
Gotta love the Northern neck and CA for place based education!

Penpals

Kindergarten has Penpals this year! We have befriended another kindergarten class in Maine. We are exchanging letters and pictures that, as our skills progress, will become emails and a Skype session in the spring.

First, we wrote a get to know you letter, drew pictures, sent a photo of our class, and chose a book by Priscilla Cummings about animals of the Chesapeake Bay.

Ms Connie weighed our package and added postage for us.

Off to the Irvington Post Office we go.

Now we wait patiently (more like anxiously) for a reply from our pals in Maine.

Convocation 2019 and

first day of Kindergarten 2019-2020

We are ready!
Mathematics on the first day of school? Absolutely! Fun in Mathematics? Definitely! We are counting, subitizing, and beginning addition. Large motor control development, as well as learning to work together. Go Kindy!
Finger Gym

Why white Playdoh? Why just our fingers and hands? Imagination, conversation, collaboration, and muscle development. We want to develop strong hands and fingers for control. We want to exercise our minds and social skills to develop friendships, creativity, higher level thinking, and connections. Throughout the year we will add color, texture, and scent to our Playdoh to continue the process.

I can!

I am responsible. Shannon is showing us an example of responsible behavior. She is a K with independent power :)

Writing, graphing, popsicles, and building new friendships.
Shannon, Kenzie, Lily, Zoƫ, Peyton, Grant, Noel, Ty'Ari, Weston, June, Violet. We are Kindergarten.

Come join in on the fun:)
