Monday, Sept. 20

Dear University community,

  • Our annual observation of Hispanic Heritage Month got off to a great start last week with our traditional El Grito. It was great to see students enjoying this kick-off event. Remember, activities are planned through Friday, Oct. 15. For more about what is on offer, visit here.
  • Have you joined our Be A Champ, Get the Shot campaign? This week, we’ll be awarding ONE of our grand prizes, FREE Fall 2021 tuition, so make sure you’re in on the prize potential. Previous winners of prizes (other than the grand prizes) remain eligible for the tuition prize.
  • Congratulations to three of our doctoral students from the A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business: Arman Canatay, Tochukwu Emegwa, and Farid Hossain Talukder. They authored a paper, Critical Country-level Determinants of Death Rate During the COVID-10 Pandemic, published in the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction. This is quite a feat and attests to combined remarkable research and effort.
  • Are you forgetting your recommended use of a face-covering on campus? Our Student Government Association and Faculty Senate created this video to help you remember. For more on our COVID-19 Response, visit our COVID-19 Response Center.
  • Yes, COVID-19 Vaccinations are available on campus. Our National Guard partners are making vaccinations available every Wednesday throughout September from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. in the Student Center Rotunda. Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are available for anyone 12 years old or older. Third doses are also available for those eligible. More info here.
  • Mark your calendar for our Fall University Convocation on Tuesday, October 5 at 1:00 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts’ Recital Hall. More details to come.
  • TAMIU’s random COVID-19 testing is now underway. If you’re selected, you’ll need to test within 72 hours. This testing is for ALL members of the University community: students, faculty, and staff. That’s you, me, and everyone. Learn more about the University's Random Testing Program by watching this informative video.
  • If you’re selected, an email will come to your official TAMIU email account. The testing is at no cost to you and takes place here on campus. Your participation helps us to actively secure the health and wellness of our campus community.
  • It provides an added measure of safety for all members of our campus community, their families, and our community at large. Simply put, we are committed to protecting what matters: you and yours. We know you share that commitment and thank you.

Have a great week… and Go Dustdevils!

TAMIU Selected to Consortium Addressing Barriers to a Diversified Teaching Workforce

TAMIU will serve as a lead institution representing Texas in the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education Consortium for Research-Based and Equitable Assessments, which will engage 14 states in a study of their state-level tests and qualifying scores for educator preparation program entry.
Dr. James O'Meara

“The impact of TAMIU teacher preparation is undeniable in South Texas. We prepare 100% of the traditionally trained teachers working in the schools within our 100-mile zone of influence (ZOI). Typically, 80% of our TAMIU graduates are still working in our ZOI 10 years after graduation. Collectively, their efforts contribute to all schools in the district, exceeding State benchmarks for graduation rates, achievement levels on reading/math, and closing achievement gaps in reading/math performance.”

- Dr. James O'Meara, dean of the College of Education
