Newborn Photo Session Guide Emily Dowell Photography

Location and Timeframe:

All newborn sessions are held in the comfort of your home. Newborn sessions last up to 2-3 hours depending on baby's needs. I do my newborn sessions around 10 am when the light coming in the windows is the brightest. Babies are often the most content around this time as well.

Pricing and your Gallery:

My all inclusive fee of $375 includes your in-home Session experience, up to 3 hours shooting time, and a minimum of 30 edited, high resolution digital files with printing rights. Your images will be displayed in a private online gallery for viewing, sharing, and optional a la carte print and canvas ordering. You will be able to download your files directly from your gallery.

My Style:

My work is timeless and sentimental with a fine art quality. I won't have you stand in stiff poses but I will do lots of guiding as well as capture candid moments.

If possible I like to do most of a newborn session on the bed of the master bedroom and in the child's nursery.

My aim is to photograph your new baby with each immediate member of the family and then as the family as a whole. Then I will do a variety of photos of your new baby alone.

I suggest dressing your baby in a simple white onesie. I also like to do some photos of your baby curled up without clothes. This is why I bring the space heater. You are of course welcome to lay out any special handmade outfits.

How you can prepare for your Newborn Photo Session:

  • Please draw back the curtains in the master bedroom and nursery and make sure nothing is obstructing the light coming in through the windows
  • I'll be using a small space heater to keep baby warm and content. Which means it can get rather warm for the rest of us. It helps to wear light weight clothing
  • A beautiful blanket adds texture, color, and memories to your newborn''s photos. Please feel free to set aside 1 or more blankets for your photo session.
  • What to wear: please wear a shirt that is neutral in color without a bold print. We want all the attention to be on your newborn's sweet face. I always love to get photos with the father and siblings too. Please make sure they have lightweight clothing that also is neutral in color. I also ask to avoid shirts with logos, characters, or print on them. They are very distracting in photos and can take away from the moment.
  • I love to include Mom and Dad's hands in photos holding baby. Wear clear or neutral nail polish on the day of your shoot. Too much distracting jewelry should be removed; I don't want the focus taken away from your sweet baby.
  • Lastly it'd be wonderful if a sturdy chair could be brought up to the master bedroom. I often stand on a chair so I can take photos looking down on baby

Siblings:

This may be a hard adjustment period for big brother or sister so I'll come in the house making it all about them. I will get all the special sibling shots first so that the rest of the session they are free to play.

Prepare your child for the session by letting them know a friend will be coming to take some photos of them. It's best not to surprise them. You can show them the photo of me below so I'm not a total stranger.

It can also help to offer a little reward for tolerating the session. The whole experience should be one of bonding and fun with a treat at a he end

Prints, Albums, and Canvas Products:

You will receive a print release with all your digital photos so you can order print products from anywhere you choose. I do offer al a carte products from a high quality print lab. I have lowered my prices to just above costs as I want my families to enjoy the highest professional quality printing. If you order through me I can show you product types before you order, make cropping decisions, and ensure color accuracy.

I look forward to working with you and meeting your new member of the family!
