JHB Syndications News 2 February

2020 Vision!

Like many industries, racing is very much a cyclical business, whether you’re a breeder, trainer, owner, syndicator, or other. The results you achieve are a culmination of the work and resources put into place many months, and in some cases years, prior.

The string of 2 year-olds we have competing at group and metropolitan level currently are the result of careful selection by the breeder (all the way back to 2015), smart rearing by the stud farms, and astute selection at the sales. This is followed by pairing them with the right trainer, which is then met with thorough management, education and training. And within that is the process of involving some great owners to enjoy the entire experience.

Looking ahead to this current crop of yearlings, it’s an exciting thought that next season’s Magic Millions, Golden Slipper or Blue Diamond winner could be among them. The team has been more diligent and selective than ever, and we are extremely proud of the quartet of yearling fillies that we’ve secured to date.

Good luck to the connections of our fillies racing tomorrow; SWAN ISLAND is on debut in the G3 Chairman’s at Caulfield. She meets a hot race here, but deserves her place on the back of a pair of excellent trials. FIRST DIAMOND is guaranteed to run in the top 3 at Morphettville…as there are only 3 runners in the race, competing for $45k in prize money!

Next week all roads lead to Warwick Farm, where BISCARA will compete for a slice of the $2m on offer in the Inglis Millennium. And speaking of which, if you’re planning on attending the Inglis Classic Sales which commence next Saturday night, by all means touch base – we’d love to catch up with you there.

Showcasing x Venus Bay

This filly is by Showcasing, a Gimcrack Stakes winning 2 year-old and son of Oasis Dream who stands for £55,000 in the UK on the back of his great success in the northern hemisphere. He is the sire of 317 winners and 33 stakes winners worldwide (as of January 2019) which puts him into the elite bracket of sires with a stakes winners to winners ratio in excess of 10%. Furthermore, he has produced a whopping 133 two year-old winners, and 174 three year-old winners, highlighting his ability to get an early runner than can train on.

From limited exposure in Australia and New Zealand to date, Showcasing has already produced 109 winners and 11 stakes winners.

This filly is out of a two-time winning O’Reilly mare, Venus Bay who has produced the Group 3 winner of 6 races, China Star. O’Reilly himself has stamped himself as a great broodmare sire, with no less than 14 Group 1 winners including the likes of Daffodil, Sacred Star, Steps In Time, Hucklebuck, Jon Snow, etc.

Info Corner - The Search For Speed

‘Bloodline’ is a short film that depicts historical selective breeding of horses for speed. Watch this insight to a fascinating subject here.

Betting strategy: Win bet, and perhaps a cheeky little quinella with the favourite, TIN HAT.

A tough and talented filly that has been group 1 placed on 3 occasions. She’s very adaptable and was given a rousing jump out at Flemington last week to have her ready for this. These early preparation 3yo races are usually split up by those that have the class but are not suited or not fit enough, and those that are fit but might lack a slight edge in class - Fundamentalist looks like she has more bases covered than most here.

Race 9 #10 PERFORMER

Betting strategy: Follow the market

At risk of having egg-on-face and not selecting one of my most tipped horses Paret, I’m going to put his stable mate Performer up as a betting proposition. I could only imagine this talented yet frustrating colt has occupied a lot of Chris Waller’s headspace of late. First up, home track, two good trials, down in class, favourable speed map, J-Mac to ride and early market support tells me that he’s here to win.

Race 7 #1 ENKI

Betting strategy: An each way nibble.

Represents good value at the double each way odds. I’m going with this no frills galloper that drops significantly in grade mainly due to his rider, Justin Huxtable. He is one of the most naturally gifted and strongest 3kg claim jockeys I’ve seen in recent years, however has battles with his weight. Down in class with the claim will give him a great chance in a race where most of the fancied runners have convictions.

Did you know that Lindsay Park have won the past two renewals of the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes? (Ennis Hill 2018, Formality 2017). They’ll be attempting a 3-peat with our exciting filly, SWAN ISLAND in race 5 at Caulfield.
Emerging star trainer BRAD WIDDUP this season (Aug-Jan) has a higher strike rate in NSW (18.9%) than 14 of the top 15 trainers in the state. And those on Twitter get to hear Brad’s son Hunter preview the runners each day…hashtag astute!

Our lovely owner Terri Odell, flanked by Blake Shinn and James Harron. Terri was lucky enough to win the free share in a horse competition at our recent open day. The Odell family also have shares in the very speedy and promising 2 year-olds Miraculous and Electrolytic.
