the Maori as known as the indigenous people or tangata whenua has journeyed to New Zealand from the eastern part of the Polynesia by canoes many hundreds of years ago,

MAORI CULTURE

The Maori is a rich culture with traditions and legends, the legends have been told by story telling through the past generations and these stories tell how the islands of New Zealand was created and other much more stories. Family is very important to Maori culture also the dance is important too , the KAPA HAKA which includes singing, dancing and facial expression each of the dance has a meaning to it. There is also another dance called the haka which is a war dance,The ALL BLACKS (National Rugby Team) performs this before each game

The Maori language is unique but the knowledge was lost for some people so they are encouraging to learn more in New Zealand . Maori is also the official 2nd language for New Zealand and they're being taught the basics at school. here are some phrases :

  • HELLO - KIA
  • WELCOME - POWHIRI
  • GREETINGS TO YOU - TENE KOE
  • GOOD - KEI TE PAI
  • SEE YOU LATER - HEI KONEI RA

When Maori people came to Aotearoa by the canoes (Maataa-houruathis ) was known as the 'GREAT FLEET' . While they were in Aotearoa they developed their own unique culture, language and traditions.

FOODS

The Maoris diet was based on birds and fish.Maori also grew root crops including potato and kumara (sweet potato).the potato is his dark purple color. To cook food the Maori people they would cook under the ground with ovens which is called a Hangi. To cook they traditionally dig a hole on the ground and puts hot stones at the bottom of the hole and then they place the meat and vegetables then the food is covered with cloth and a mound of earth trapping the heat around the food and it cooks!!

CLOTHINGS

Traditionally their clothes are made of plants and animal skins, from that they're made into a cloak or a rain cape one type of rain cape is called the ,Whakatipu – a well made rain cape.
