Hi everyone,

My name is Jingna and I am a fashion and fine art photographer living in New York City.

This is my first event with Born Digital, and I am very excited to be holding a seminar in Japan.

With this event, I will be sharing with you how I create and approach lighting for my photography, a little bit about my work, and also discuss the business and marketing aspects of being a freelance artist.

Outside of photography, I used to own and manage a professional gaming team in North America, I represent a few illustrators and concept artists for freelance work, and also worked on CGHUB in its very early days for two years.

I hope my unique experiences at the intersection of these fields will bring something interesting for everyone.

I look forward to meeting you ✨

- Jingna Zhang

"The Death of Eurydice"

The Death of Eurydice is one of the final pieces from my personal project "Motherland Chronicles".

For this personal project, I had to create a new piece of work weekly, so I had to be careful about my time and budget spent on the photoshooting.

In the end, most of the series was shot in my own apartment. I would often build a set in my living room.

This shot for example, I bought a children’s inflatable pool, filled it with water, lined it with a painted backdrop, and then taped flowers to the backdrop.

I wanted the lighting to emulate natural conditions as much as possible, so I looked for the largest possible light source possible from top down, and made a makeshift top down light by pointing a light source at my living room ceiling, to create the effect of softness and evenness.

Forgotten Fairytales

When I first started photography, I didn’t know much about styling, hair, or makeup. So I attempted to make my images more interesting by playing with compositions and experimenting with shapes and movements in hair, clothes, and the model’s poses.

Here, in one of my earliest pieces, I made the dress for my school assignment (I was studying fashion design), and draped it across the wall.

The lighting was completely natural. I think even back then, I have been loving this type of softness with lighting. And I continue to try to make it in my work, whether with artificial lighting or not.

Bloom

This was an image featured in Vogue Japan Wedding Magazine this year. Typically, I shoot on textured backgrounds and black backgrounds a lot and lighting for those types of images are usually quite straightforward—I only need one well-positioned light to make something feel a little moody and painting-like, the type of images I make with my style.

But when it comes to light colored or white backgrounds, it’s a little more complicated. To get something with a feeling of clean lighting, using one light can mean that you will cast shadows from the model onto the backdrop, or have a slightly boring effect with shadows on the model. So I treat the model kind of light a sculpture, and think about what is the most interesting way for presenting it.

I will use at least 2-3 lights together—one or two on the model, and one or two to light up the background so as to get rid of shadows I don’t want. In this example, even though her face is somewhat in the shadows, due to the way the light surrounds and hugs her face, instead of being too dark or dramatic, the shadow of the shadows makes the image a little more unconventional as a makeup photo instead, but at the same time, it still keeps it a clean enough image to be commercially viable.

Coco

From a cover shoot for Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam featuring supermodel Coco Rocha. The style of this shot is very similar to my personal work.

As an artist, whether freelancing or working for a studio, I always believe that it is important to take time out to do personal work that is vastly different from what you make on your main job.

You can treat it like a hobby, or see it as studies and exercises. Because without showing the world what you can do, it’s not possible to be hired for the things you really love to do, right?

So even though when I first started my personal projects with shoots that referenced classical paintings or artwork of artists like Yoshitaka Amano, I didn’t care that people in fashion wouldn’t understand. In the end, as the styles matured, I learned both a lot of new techniques and styles, as well as skills to apply to my commercial jobs. And when possible, my close collaborators would request that I shoot something more painting-like for magazines. So I always believe—no matter what stage of career someone is at, personal and individualistic work will always matter, and will always pay off.

Claire

For a while now this year, I have been wanting to create an Asian-themed new series. I had been in the preparation phase for it for a few months, but I hadn’t made any new shoots for it until a company approached me about filming an interview and some behind-the-scenes video.

This shoot was done as a first experiment for that series, acting like a study or exercise.

I like to do numerous studies and tests before seriously saying that I am making a new project. It’s an important process and mindset for researching and experimenting with something new, to find out what works and what doesn’t.

Treating it less formally but still very seriously is important—as it allows me to explore my project’s elements and details, and experiment with new lighting, retouching and styling, all without being too worried about failing.

Over time, this process will eventually cumulate in a collection of work that is cohesive, unique, and new, as I continue to experiment and iterate, creating a new style in the process.

Aurora

From a fashion shoot for Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam.

I lit this shot similar to how I lit the Claire piece—with a very large light source. But what changed were the position of light and the environment of the set surrounding the subject.

During photography people often forget how much bounce lights and environment can affect the lighting in an image. So I think about it a little bit like lighting in 3D. Knowing that many factors are not the direct result of the light shining on an area, but the result of the environment that reacts to it—remembering that is important. And controlling that and adjusting things accordingly is what truly makes each shot individual.
