Abolishment of Salvery
" On the first day of January, in this year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, all persons held as slaves within any state in rebellion against United States shall be free" - Abraham Lincoln. Salvery for African Americans was terrifing. Violence was involved and they were used from everyday work. "So now, even though seventy years have passed since Salvery, most white people still think of us as they did then- that we're not good as they are..." - (Taylor 129). People treated them as if they were nothing but a tool.
Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." -The Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America
Lynching is killing someone by hanging them. In Roll of Thunder lynching was used if a black person broke a Jim Crow law. Something's that you could get lynched for are if a black man shook a white mans hand it showed equality, Black people had to get off the sidewalk if a White person was walking on it, and Black men had to take off their hats when a White personal was around. In the Book, Cassie accidentally ran into Lillian Jean while walking on the sidewalk and Lillian Jean's dad make Cassie get off the sidewalk and apologize for what she did. “Heard tell they lynched a boy a few days ago at Crosston.” -(Taylor 38)
