Last Week of Summer My Week in Sports - Week of September 18, 2017

It was the last week of summer but with temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s, it was hard to tell that fall was on the horizon. On deck for the week was Varsity Volleyball, JV Football and Varsity Football.

It was senior night for Varsity Volleyball but with a relatively young team, they only had one senior player, Nicole Licciardello (11) and one senior manager. Their first match of the evening was against Alexander High School.

Sophomore A. Smith (12)

Sophomore C. Russell (9)

Sophomore C. Miller (15)

Junior E. Ahrens (8)

Senior N. Licciardello (11)

Junior B. Stopher (1)

Allatoona went 2-0 to win their match over Alexander.

After shooting the first match, I made my way over to the football field to catch the rest of Allatoona versus Harrison JV football game.

Only 9 miles separate Allatoona High School from Harrison School, 8.4 miles to be exact, so most of these athletes have known each other since grade school. Adds another element to "just a football game."

It was a close game but Harrison JV football came up with win with a final score of 21-19.

Up next was a game listed as a Top 10 game in the state of Georgia by the AJC.

AJC called this one of the top 10 games of the week. Considered high school neighbors, this is only the second year Allatoona and Harrison have been in the same classification (6-AAAAAA). Since they're also in the same region, it was sure to be an energy-fueled atmosphere, not only on the field but also in the stands.

Senior Riaz McCormick (15)

You may not know but this is only Allatoona's 10th year being open. In those 10 years, they've had multiple state champions and they were honored during the pre-game along with the first Allatoona High School Principal, Scott Bursmith.

Allatoona High School State Champions:

  • 2012 Girls' Soccer
  • 2014 Air Rifle
  • 2015 Football
  • 2015 One Act Play
  • 2016 Lacrosse
  • 2017 Boys' Track
  • Multiple individual state champions

I'm not going to lie, I was super excited. Such an electric atmosphere.

It's what Friday Night Lights is all about.

Senior Rhett Russell (18)

Junior Dawson Coltran (19)

Junior AJ Thomas (14)

Sophomore Dante Marshall (9)

Senior Skylar Davis (81) with a 50-yard field goal.

Final Score:

Harrison 27

Allatoona 10

It's Fall Break for Cobb County during the week of September 25, 2017 and most sports aren't competing. Allatoona Varsity Softball will travel to Harrison for a make-up game but it will be quiet for the rest of the week.

Until then...

Every game is everything.
