Cakes for Canada

Hello, hello! My name is Natalie Lowry and I am a freshman at John Brown University. I am pursuing a degree in Chemistry with the hope of eventually becoming a high school chemistry teacher. I have lived in Siloam Springs, Arkansas all of my life and I absolutely love it here. When I graduate from John Brown University, I plan to live in Siloam Springs for a while and then move somewhere else but I’m really up for anything. After I graduate from John Brown University, I also want to get my Master’s degree in Education at the University in Arkansas. I think it will be slightly challenging to go from studying only science to studying only education but I am still very excited! I could have gone to the University of Arkansas and got a degree in Science Education but I really wanted to go to JBU even though they don’t offer a major in science education.

I have always been interested in baking. In fact, I have enjoyed making meals and sweet treats for my family for years. I started out making simple meals and then I started making more complicated recipes. After I got used to cooking meals, I started to get into making cute little desserts. After that, I made cheesecake stuffed red velvet cupcakes and that’s what got me hooked on baking sweet treats. For the last few months I have been waiting on the perfect opportunity to bake a cake and I thought I would just bake it on easter but then something very unexpected happened. My sister got engaged over spring break! It was the perfect opportunity for me to bake my first cake. I made a two tiered cake with an ivory rosette design on the bottom tier and a smooth layer of light blue buttercream on the top tier. It was a complete success and my family love it! I am planning to bake a cake for my mom’s birthday, for easter, and maybe for my sisters wedding. For my mom’s birthday I am planning on baking a two-tiered cake. For the top tier, I will put a smooth layer of buttercream on it and draw an edible watercolor design. For the bottom tier I am planning on using the same vanilla buttercream but using a spoon in a circular motion to add some texture to it. The flavor is going to be almond cream upon my mom’s request. For Easter, I’m baking a carrot cake. This cake will only be one tier but it will have 3 layers. I also plan on adding a smooth layer of vanilla buttercream to the outside but this time I’m going to decorate the cake with flower made out of icing. I am adding to this story a few weeks later because I need more words. I ended up baking a cake for my mom’s birthday and it seemed like every single thing that could go wrong, went wrong. I decided to bake a 2 tiered confetti cake with blue icing and buttercream flowers. I bought all of the colors that I wanted, all of the tips, and all of the ingredients--or so I thought. I started making the flowers out of buttercream icing and I quickly realized that something was wrong. The flowers wouldn’t stand up right and I realized that it was because I made the wrong type of icing. I should have made a stiffer icing so that the flowers would stand up but I just used buttercream icing and when it came time to put the flowers on the cake, they all started to melt. Before I even got to the point, another huge thing went wrong. I had been cooking for a few hours and my sister came home and said that she needed to use the mixer. The only problem was that I had my icing that I was going to put on the cake in the mixer.
This summer I am going on a missions trip in Toronto Canada with a group from my church. While we’re there, we will be leading a science camp and sharing about who God is through skits, showing love, and through science. I have gone on this trip for the past 3 years and I am so excited to go this year because God has truly instilled in me a deep passion for science and I am so excited to be able to share who God is with kids who love science. The only hiccup is that the trip costs over $500. I could save money from my summer job but I am planning on saving all of the money that I make this summer to help pay for my college expenses. It didn’t take me long to think of an idea to earn money though! Since I love baking, I had the idea to bake cakes, cupcakes, and cake pops to earn money for Canada. I’m very excited because I get to do something that I love to be able to do what I love even more; teaching science! I am also adding to this a few weeks later because it wasn’t long enough but I do have a very exciting update. Every year the students are split into 3 different groups. In each classroom, one of the adult leaders teaches and all of the students leaders help the teacher by sitting at tables and helping the kids with the crafts and keeping the calm and focused during the lesson. For the past three years, I have been one of the leaders that sit at the table and help the kids but this year I got very exciting news. I will be one of the main teachers! I am teaching the middle group of students which are ages eight through 10. I want to be a science teacher someday so this will be a wonderful time to practice and learn more about teaching. A few weeks ago our team had a meeting and we discussed the first topic: diatoms. Before the meeting, I had never heard of them but I left the meeting feeling fascinated. It still blows my mind that we will be teaching kids about topics that we don’t even fully understand but I am so very excited. I wasn’t able to go last year but I heard that the kids were extra unruly so they have made changes to the camp. It will be interesting to see how it goes this year! We only have two and a half months until we leave and I am so excited.
