To accept without question that we are stewards of SRL and to recognise that our key function is to ensure that SRL is: a) celebrated (through treasured relationships) - and in that ‘celebrating’ - b) appreciate (why & how SRL presents opportunities for people in our communities to use their SRL experiences to develop wisdom rather than having it suppressed – i.e., teachable moments, good people).

To first appreciate the key business function of SRL we must be open to accepting the following three (3) policy framework based definitions of the business that is SRL:

Sport' is defined as: A human activity involving physical exertion and skill as the primary focus of the activity, with elements of competition where rules and patterns of behaviour governing the activity exist formally through organisations and is generally recognised as a sport.

'Active Recreation' is defined as activities engaged in for the purpose of relaxation, health and wellbeing or enjoyment with the primary activity requiring physical exertion, and the primary focus on human activity

Leisure is defined as: R.E.S.T the segment of business focused on recreation, entertainment, sports, and tourism (REST).

Behind the scenes role

When you watch a TV show you see the actors in the starring roles. But if you take a look at the credits later, it’s not hard to notice that there are many other people that were involved in the making of the production. Sport is similar.

The role involves running the business side of SRL, such as managing people, working in and for teams, entrepreneurship, marketing and promotion, gaining sponsorships, organising events, media communication, facility management, office administration, financial management, hiring and firing professional staff, working with volunteers.

To be a SRL business professional, you need skills in business management, marketing, accounting, legal issues, administration, and communications. The first step is to gain some qualifications.

In becoming educated in the role of the SRL administrator there are three (3) key tenets that support a behind the scenes role. They include:

fuel both personal and professional growth of your organisation through collaboration

to be mindful of giving everyone a voice so the organisation can work towards achieving common goals, and

That your governance structure reinforces the above two dot points.

Working for the public good

SRL workplace people understand the non rival feature of the organisation in which they work.

That the organisations presents equity: where one persons involvement does not prevent another from being involved

"If your teeth are clenched and your fists are clenched, your lifespan is probably compressed.

Working in SRL is stressful. There is eustress (good stress) and there is distress (bad stress).

Psychologists tell us that eustress fuels success and achievement while distress fuels anxiety sorrow and pain.

To manage stress in what ever form these three 3 conventions might help to the SRL manager. They are

Paradox | Humour | Change
