SCOTT'S 30th BIRTHDAY BASH

Birthday's are often something which are celebrated every year, but nothing like the big birthdays; such as 18th, 21st, 30th etc.

As Scott turned 30, he found it the perfect excuse to throw a party with his friends and his family, with myself and Jamie Agnew going to cover the event for college, with the party starting at 7:30, while Jamie and I left at 11pm, the party continued on till 1am and then went on in the nightclubs until they shut.

At this event, Jamie and I tried to cover as many photos as possible, with some portrait photos as well as some natural photos of people dancing, talking etc, and some "still life" shots of the surroundings, and what was included in the party.

IMAGE ONE - As the party started to fill, the guest book also started to fill, with the names and messages from those attending, with the "Post Box" for all the cards which the guests have brought for Scott, so that they can all be kept in the one place so nothing gets missing. I have composed this image in so that you can see some of the 30th birthday banner, with the 30's hanging from the ceiling and then the personalised memories on the table, including the book, card post box and the personalised "The Sun Newspaper", because of this, I feel like it is going to show the viewer the feel of the environment.

IMAGE TWO - Birthday boy, Scott, talking to all of the guests, thanking them for being there and giving him wonderful gifts. I have composed this image in so that Scott is really the only thing that you can see within the image, showing his background surroundings of the DJ and the lights which are shining onto the dance floor.

IMAGE THREE - With not only a drinks bar available for alcohol and soft drinks, there was a shot bar - the night is going to end messy! I have composed this image in so that the row of shot glasses start at the right hand side of the image, and slightly lead into the middle of the image, where you see a green bottle of Sourz with a barman in the background. As well as this, you also see the Jagermeister mat, where the shot glasses will sit filled for the customers!

IMAGE FOUR - Following on from Image Three, birthday boy, Scott, decided to face the shots bar with one of his friends, to have a couple of shots. I have composed this image in so that Scott and his friend are centre within the image, with the rest of the surroundings being out of focus, meaning that the focus of the viewer is right onto the people having shots.

IMAGE FIVE - It's never a birthday without a birthday cake, and even more so, it's never a "big" birthday without a personalised cake. For Scott's birthday, he got a Las Vegas cake, while it is basing on the casinos. I have composed this image in so that the whole image is filled with the cake, meaning that the viewers full attention is on the cake, and cannot stray elsewhere.

IMAGE SIX - As Scott asks for some photos of himself with his friends and his family, it results in Jamie and I capturing some portrait shots. In this image, Scott stands with his family and friends, to actually receive a nice shot which can be used and printed, while he also has fun shots - like Image Four, as he stands taking shots. I have composed this image in so that each person in the image nicely fits into the image, meaning that there is no empty space which can contain something eye-catching.

IMAGE SEVEN - As people enjoy the drink, and take in their environment, the happy vibes lead to a lot of people getting on the dance floor and having fun, dancing with friends, and even those they have never met before. I have composed this image in so that both of the people dancing are of the main focus of the image, while you can see some of the background, it is out of focus, and therefore, not too much eye catching.

IMAGE EIGHT - Like Image Six, Scott asks for some photos of himself with his friends and his family, it results in Jamie and I capturing some portrait shots. In this image, Scott stands with his family and friends, to actually receive a nice shot which can be used and printed. I have composed this image in so that each person in the image nicely fits into the image, meaning that there is nothing else within the image which is drawing the viewers attention away from the main focus, which is of the people within the image.
IMAGE NINE - The aftermath of the food and the drinks, as the people are either up dancing, or leaving to start making their way home, with the empty plates sitting from the buffet that they'd had prior, with empty glasses and bottles, while some are sitting half full. I have composed this image in so that the viewer can clearly see some of the empty glasses, while some are slightly out of focus, but due to this, I feel like the viewer will scan the image carefully but quickly, taking in the environment, and getting the feel of the party.

My biggest struggle throughout photographing at this event was the lighting, as while I arrived at the event with my camera and flash, I expected there to be enough lighting to capture some of the portrait shots, but it was proven to be difficult, which resulted in Jamie and I working together, with one of us holding a flash onto the people in so that the camera could focus and have the shot taken. Despite this issue, it was easily overcome, which resulted in me having many images I was happy to use as finals.
