2019 Coker College baseball Season Preview

Last season

The Cobras opened the 2018 season 9-1 before entering conference play and finished the year with a 14-10 record at playing in the friendly confines of Tom J. New Field at Dave Schmotzer Stadium. In those first 10 home games, newcomer junior transfer Michael DeVecchio whirled three complete games with two shutouts in his first three starts as a Cobra.

Coker rounded out the season with a team batting average of .290, and had an on base percentage of .387 and slugging percentage of .399 with 262 runs in 43 total games. The Navy and Gold closed out the 2018 campaign with three-straight conference series wins.

Connor Cleary was selected to the Google Cloud Academic All-America Third-Team, a prestigious award that recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.

THIS season

Coker enter the 2018-2019 season with a strong group of player, and a proficient group of new recruits. The Cobras began the season 1-2-1, picking up on their first victory of the season over Chowan on Sunday.

Sophomore Reilly Hall returns to the Navy and Gold after a having productive freshman season batting .309 primarily from the leadoff position. Hall capitalized on his abilities to get on base (.427), as he held a streak of 17 games reaching base safely on the year.

In addition to the on field action, the Coker College baseball team started the 2018-2019 season by giving back to the Hartsville community after the Thanksgiving holiday by volunteering to host a youth baseball camp along with former major league baseball stars Ken Griffey Jr. and Orlando Hudson.

head coach

Luke Harrigan was named the head baseball coach for Coker in May 2016, and has since led the Cobras to a total of 40 wins, and a trip to the South Atlantic Conference tournament in 2017. His pitching staff led the conference in fewest home runs allowed in 2018, and he coached two All-Conference selections in Griffin Hollifield (2nd team, relief pitcher) and Forrest Arnold (honorable mention, starting pitcher) during the 2017 season

impact players

DeVecchio transferred from Harford Community College last season. He made an immediate impact on the mound for the Navy and Gold. The left-hander was 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA in his first 21.0 innings pitched with six walks and 17 strikeouts. DeVecchio made 11 starts, and appeared in a total of 12 games. Additionally, he opened the season 3-0 with two complete game shutouts (vs. Chowan 2/3, vs. Alderson Broaddus (2/18) and did not allow a run for 23.2 innings.

Hall is a sophomore that quickly made an impact during his freshman season. He played in 42 games during an outstanding freshman season with the Cobras where he posted a .309 batting average with a .427 on base percentage, and led team with 28 walks. Hall was ranked 18th in Walks in South Atlantic Conference, and tied for team lead with seven steals in eight attempts. In addition, Hall recorded nine multi-hit games and went 2-5 with a triple and four RBI against Lincoln Memorial (4/6).
