How to Apply to Take the VTNE

To apply to take the VTNE you must complete 5 steps. Some have strict due dates and fees. All fees are due at the time of the application.

  1. Fill out and return the ED from
  2. Apply to AAVSB
  3. Apply to Continental Testing
  4. Send separate transcripts to BOTH Continental Testing and AAVSB
  5. Apply for your license through IDFPR

The ED Form

You will be given two copies of the ED form in your Capstone class. Fill out the top section of the forms and return to Karen ASAP.

You will be mailed a second ED form after you graduate. You will send this in with your application to IDFPR. See the IDFPR instructions for details.

Apply to AAVSB

Apply to AAVSB online. You will be asked to pay a fee of $330.00 when you submit your application.

You can only apply for the exam during a certain window. The window for the spring exam opens December 15th, 2020. The window for the summer exam will open April 15th.

Apply to Continental Testing

Apply to Continental Testing online. This application can be started at any time. You will be asked to pay a fee of $107.00 when you apply.

Send Transcripts

You can order official transcripts online from JJC and have them sent to BOTH AAVSB and Continental Testing. If you have trouble with the link, you can get there from the Registrar's website.

Official transcripts cost $9 each, and you will send them twice for a total of $18.

IMPORTANT: When ordering transcripts make sure you mark "hold for degree" if you have not yet graduated. Do not select this option if you are a graduate.

Official transcripts can be mailed or emailed to AAVSB. Select "Order Electronic/PDF Transcripts" to email and "Order Paper Hard Copy Transcripts" to mail. Check here for AAVSB's address or email.

Apply to IDFPR

When you apply to IDFPR, you are applying for an Illinois Veterinary Technician license. Apply to this AFTER YOU PASS YOUR VTNE.

Print and mail in the application along with the ED form you were mailed after graduation. There is no online application. Please read the following carefully on how to fill out this application:

You must fill out the form titled "Application for Licensure And/Or Examination" (4 pages). You DO NOT need to fill out any other forms. (Do not fill out the forms titled "Certification by Agency/Licensing Board" or "Certification of Education". You do not need to print or send these forms). You will be mailed a Certificate of Education (ED) form after you graduate. Make sure you send it with your application.

For Part 1, the profession name is "Certified Veterinary Technician" and the profession code is 095. Licensure Method is "Acceptance of Examination" and the fee is $50.00.

Fill out Part 3 to the best of you ability. If there are any issues with your information you will be contacted for a correction. You do not need to list any specialized training.

You only need to add information to Part 4 if you are currently licensed as a vet tech in another state or hold a different license in Illinois.

You only need to add information to Part 5 if you have already taken the VTNE in Illinois or another state.

Fill out Part 7 only if you have this information from when you took your exam.

When your application is complete mail it and your ED form to the following address along with your fee. Fee payment must be in the form of a check or money order made payable to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Mail to the following address:

Applying for Test Accommodations

Test accommodations can be applied for through Continental Testing with this form. You must have a documented disability covered under the U.S. Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA).

There's a lot of paperwork with this process, so start early! You may apply for this as soon as you have applied to Continental Testing.

Retaking the VTNE

If you did not pass your VTNE, you can retake the exam during future exam windows. The exam is given three times per year. Current information on exam windows and deadlines can be found on the AAVSB and Continental Testing websites.

To reapply, you must:

  • Send in a new application to AAVSB with fees
  • Send in a new application to Continental Testing with fees
  • You do NOT need to resend transcripts
  • Once you pass your exam, you will need to apply to IDFPR

Note: Illinois does not place restrictions on how many times you can retake the VTNE, however AAVSB will require you to appeal if you try to take the exam more than five times. See their webpage for more details.
