Principal's Report
Welcome BBQ
The Welcome BBQ held last Friday evening was a great success. With approximately 200 people attending it was a fantastic turnout and lovely to see our school community welcome new families and reconnect with others.
A very big thank you to the Year 6 organising team: Louise Raggett, Susannah Rands, Rachel Veitch and Rachel Wald, with support from Bree Alami, our P&C President and Year 6 parent.
An Opportunity to Thank Others
I recently received an email from proud mum Issy......
I thought I would share with you a nice story of what Daniel and Finn got up to on an arranged play date during the summer holidays.
The boys got together for a play date, when the bushfires were at their worst and thought about what they could do. They came up with the idea of raising money for the Rural Fire Service by telling jokes to the community.
So they quickly got busy making some signs, studied a joke book, gathered a bucket and some chairs and took themselves over the road to set up camp.
They were excited and a tad nervous at first but soon members of the public came past and started to donate. Before they knew it, they had raised about $90. They continued to do this over a couple of weekends and raised a total of $350. Pretty awesome we thought!
This week I arranged a meeting with Nick Lyons, Captain of the RFS station at North Wahroonga. He was so impressed to hear that the boys came up with the idea themselves. We met up on Saturday and the boys proudly handed over the money. Nick handed them both a Certificate of Appreciation and told them that the money will go towards some well needed new radios for their trucks. The boys got to meet a lot of the members of the unit, had a full tour of the station and one of the trucks.
Thank you also to Suri and Claudia from 5F who, like the boys, deserved to be recognised for very generously fundraising for the Rural Fire Service over the holidays.
Playing their trumpets in front of the IGA store, the girls raised over $500. What an outstanding effort! We are so proud of the enthusiastic, caring and thoughtful way you committed to helping others.
Harmony Day Celebrations for Grandparents and Special Friends
This year as part of our Harmony Day celebrations we are inviting Grandparents and Special Friends (parents too, if Grandparents are unavailable) to take part in our activities. Harmony Day is a time to celebrate Australia’s diverse culture, focusing on inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
Harmony Day celebrations at Turramurra North PS will take place on Tuesday, 17 March, from 9:00am to 11:30am. Grandparents and Special Friends will be invited into the classrooms to celebrate what students have learnt, and continue to learn.
After time in the classrooms, our visitors are invited to enjoy some morning tea in the school hall. The top quad in our playground will also provide an opportunity to view some other Harmony Day displays created by the students.
Students (and Grandparents/Special Friends) are encouraged to wear their National Dress or the colour orange to represent Harmony Day.
To help us assist any Grandparents or Special Friends, please ensure they are aware of the class name/s for the children they will be visiting. In the event of wet weather, a School Stream message will be sent. We look forward to sharing this TNPS celebration with you.

Parent Teacher Interviews (K-2) and Student Led Conferences (Years 3-6)
As we head towards the end of Term 1, we would like to offer all parents/carers an opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher/s. Parent Teacher Interviews will be held for K-2 parents/carers (K-2 students do not need to attend), enabling an uninterrupted time for you to discuss your child’s progress. Student Led Conferences will be held for Year 3-6 parents/carers. These conferences are discussions, led by your child, to inform you of their goals in learning and progress towards achieving them. Year 3-6 students are expected to attend.
Information will be sent home very soon which explains the online booking system and details your options for choosing a time. Interviews and conferences will be held in your child's classroom from Monday, 30 March to Friday, 3 April.
Yupo Art
Did you know Yupo paper is 100% recyclable and very versatile to work with? Yupo has an extra smooth surface and can be used with a combination of media, including watercolours, ink, acrylic paint, oil pastels, graphite and silkscreen. Year 6 produced some wonderful abstract images, with Mrs Plasto, by experimenting with Yupo paper, and in the process have discovered techniques they never thought possible!
Letters from the Goldfields
Students in 5F have been enjoying working with Year 6 and their teachers to learn about life on the Australian Goldfields. Part of a letter home....
1852, March 26
Dear Nora my love,
How is Poland? New Holland is much different and very diverse. I know I promised I would discover lots of gold, but I haven’t had much luck. My pan is breaking from the harsh rocks. The days pass by dully as my shillings slip out of my fingers. Soon the days turn into weeks, and I have yet to buy a licence. I haven’t eaten for five days, but my stomach has stopped hurting. Maybe I’ll stop buying food altogether, but I cant give up, right? Fortunately, my mate Phillip was lucky and is nice enough to give me a slice of bread. The trap is over-whelming and frightening but it shan’t frighten me. Tomorrow I will continue on my daily, back breaking work........Written by Milli, 5F.

School Banking
School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for your children to learn about money and develop good savings habits.
Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards.
This year’s rewards are more eco-friendly and sustainable.
The rewards in Term 1 are:
- Terry Denton’s Activity Book
- Mini Soccer Ball (size 2)
For new bankers (in any year), getting involved in School Banking is easy!
All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:
1. Online
Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.
2. In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.
If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.
School Banking day is Wednesday. If you would like more information contact your school banking co-ordinator Tania Kullmann on tkullmann@bigpond.com who can assist you.
P & C NEWS
P&C Fundraising plans for 2020
In planning for the coming year’s fundraising activity the P&C Executive team has decided to take a new approach. Rather than rely on volunteers to organise the events as we've done in the past - which has unfortunately led to the same group of volunteers organising all of the events - we will now be allocating each event to a year group.
It will be each year group’s responsibility to organise and run their allocated event. There is a run sheet available for each event and organisers are welcome to use the run sheet or re-invent the event and run it as they choose.
The two larger events, trivia night and art show, are shared across 2 year groups.
Event allocation is as follows:
Welcome BBQ - Yr 6
Date: FRI 21 FEB (evening) (T1 W4)
Trivia night - Yr 2 & 3
Date: A Saturday night in Term 2 - TBD
Mother’s Day stall - Yr 1
Date: WED 6 MAY
Father’s Day stall - Kindy
Date: WED 2 SEP
Art show - Yr 4 & 5
Date: FRI 13 NOV (T4 W5)
The exec team will be in contact with each year(s) prior to the event with the run sheet and the opportunity to ask any questions.
