.

Muhammad

The founder of Islam is The Prophet Muhammad. He founded this religion in 610 A.D in Saudi Arabia. He dedicated his life to teaching and spreading the idea of monotheism in a world of polytheistic beliefs. Muhammad is considered the last of the prophets of God by Muslims. He is the messenger of Allah.

Mosque

The main deity of Islam is monotheism, the belief in only one god. The god that Muslims worship is Allah. Allah is the most important belief to Muslims. The name of God is Allah and is considered the creator of everything including human beings.

Muslims believe that the universe, God, and humanity are the most important. They believe that the name of God is Allah and that there is only one. Humans are created to obey and serve Allah. Muslims must live a life that is pleasing to Allah at all times. After death, there will be a judgement day to determine whether the continued existence of the soul will go to an eternal paradise considered Heaven or the torture of Hell.

Five Pillars of Islam

The Five Pillars of Islam are the five duties of every Muslim. These five pillars are to bring rewards in life and afterlife as well:

  1. Shahada : Faith that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah
  2. Salat : Prayer performed five times a day
  3. Zakat : Almsgiving and charity
  4. Sawm : Fasting during Ramadan during the ninth month of the Islamic year
  5. Hajj : Pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime
The Qur'an

The two main sacred texts in Islam are the Qur'an and the Hadith. The word Qur'an means "recitation" in Arabic. Qur'an is the most sacred text and highest authority in Islam. Muslims believe that the Qur'an is the literal word of Allah that was revealed to Muhammad. The Hadith is a text that has sayings of Muhammad and followers of him. Hadith means "report" in Arabic. It is a secondary source that includes practice, doctrine, and law.

Islam spread across the Arabian Peninsula first, then North America and the Middle East. These areas were originally polytheistic and later were converted to majority monotheistic. As Islam increased, trade also did. Islam also spread to Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, Western Europe, and modern Turkey. 1/6 of the world's population are Muslims. Knowledge of calligraphy, art, philosophy, architecture, medical advances, math, and science extended as well.

Muslims face many social issues everyday. Many hurtful stereotypes are created and are targeted to them because of their religion.
