An 8th grade Cityside student works on an illustration as part of a public mural installation at Peace and Plenty Park. Students are creating 54 murals that will decorate the fencing around the park. Watch as the murals are installed by a group of Wheeler students from all grades on Founder's Day this May. Did you know: Nearly 22 Cityside projects related to History, Civics, Art, Science, and Economics are underway?
Growing Minds: Joyfully Solving The Problems of Math
BY FELICIA VINCES, LOWER SCHOOL DIRECTOR, AND REBECCA BOSWELL, LOWER SCHOOL MATH CURRICULUM COORDINATOR
If you ask some adults about their experiences in math class growing up, you may get a mixed-bag of responses ranging from groans and grunts to squeals and boasts. Math classes in the Wheeler Lower School aim to incorporate rich activity and collaborative problem solving so kids find the wonder and curiosity of math rather than drudgery. When students inevitably ask, “When will I ever use this?”, a teacher knows that math is about problem-solving and as such can be applied easily to real-life situations. The nuances of understanding and visualizing a math scenario is the foundation to being able to develop and sequence a plan to solve that problem. Therein lies the real-life application. Of course, one will sometimes encounter a problem that doesn’t appear like the others seen before, but that is where the magic begins.
3rd Grade student, Lily talks about how she engineered a robotic tiger.
Lily is in the 3rd grade at The Hamilton School at Wheeler and successfully engineered this robotic tiger in our Hirsch/Alperin Design Innovate Build Lab (The DIB Lab) as an independent Aerie enrichment project. We loved the video so much we wanted to share Lily's newly-discovered "superpower" with all of you.
This Week at Wheeler: In the Lower School, our students have worked across disciplines to explore the Harlem Renaissance, from notable people in history to music, and science and art; students have collaborated and share what they've learned all semester long. Our Upper School students share their knowledge with our young ones by assisting in Joyce Ball's Academic Support classroom, and with Revisit Day coming up soon, we're excited to welcome new faces to our campus and share next year's Upper School course offerings. Our Wheeler Warriors will be in practice mode during Spring Break, here is their schedule.
In other exciting news, our Chess teams in all three divisions are finishing their seasons strong, with both Middle and Upper School teams in the lead. Model UN Club returned from the National High School Model United Nations conference in NYC . Coach Ginny Laffey "In observing the committees in action, I was reminded that diplomacy is hard and requires work that often goes unacknowledged as many international issues are difficult to resolve and often are managed rather than solved. I applaud the students for embracing this process and enjoying the satisfaction of collaboration and mediation that is often not about winning or losing but rather making the best possible plan for all involved."
