It's the most important holiday of the year for the people of Azerbaijan, the new year!

On the day of Novruz, citizens are commonly found celebrating in dances and children dress up.

This ancient holiday can be traced all the way back 5,000 years, to the Sumerians and the Babylonians.

This shows some of the rich cultural food commonly found on Novruz

This year, it will be celebrated on March 20th, 2017

Preparation for Novruz begins 4 months before

Every Tuesday is dedicated to the 4 elements, (fire, wind, water, and earth) People paint eggs, make new dresses, and make national pastries on these days.

Examples of national pastries

The pakhlava and pistachio halva are two commonly known desserts.

Public dancing and other entertainment is very common for Novruz, as the celebration is a very happy day for the citizens.

To honor their pre Islamic beliefs to Zoroastrian, it is not uncommon for young children as well as adults to jump over a small fire as a sacrificial statement.
