Duke of westminster award selection event - day 1&2 A round-up of the first 2 days in Somerset

Our annual Somerset selection event is a real CVQO highlight and it’s hard to believe we’re already halfway through.

Day 1 and 2 have flown by thanks to a packed schedule and fantastic weather – definitely not in keeping with traditional Somerset conditions.

nobody move...

Shortly after arriving on the Monday afternoon, our cadets spent a short time on some media tasks (photography, interviews and so on) before getting stuck into their first team challenge: the gun run.

This is a mock field gun exercise requiring groups to work together to assemble and disassemble a scaled down field gun, running it up and down a field. It was the perfect opportunity for our finalists to stretch their legs after travelling to Somerset and start to get to know each other.

We were hugely impressed with the level of teamwork on display at such an early stage. One of the groups learned the hard way that a loose pin will mean it’s highly likely one of the gun wheels will detach itself and roll down one of the surrounding hills!

After this, it was time to settle into tents and enjoy a hearty evening meal before beginning their Institute of Leadership and Management Level 3 work and listening to a South Africa trip briefing. The cadets finished the day by sitting around the campfire and bonding further.

Day 2 saw an early start and breakfast, followed by some ILM classroom work and the chance to re-do the gun run challenge to show what the groups had learned since their practice run the day before. Very happy to report no wheels were lost this time around.

where did that wheel go?

After lunch, the finalists were split down into 3 groups of 10 for their first rotations – physical command tasks, theoretical table top exercises and a presentation challenge. There will be 2 more rotations on day 3 giving the cadets the chance to experience each element of the selection week.

We’ve seen some fantastic characters emerging already and can’t wait to see what day 3 and 4 bring.
