LSPA SUMMER 2019 Learning about journalism with friends For a week

Here is some of my work from this week at the Louisiana Scholastic Press Association.--Carley Nail

LSU Reveille adviser encourages students with his journalism journey

LSU Reveille adviser Jeff Gauger gave words of advice to 14 high school journalism students at a press conference by explaining how owning a newspaper business prepared him for his current career.

Gauger, a former newspaper owner, told the journalists at the Louisiana Scholastic Press Association Summer Institute of the time and effort he spent running the Washington Weekly for a town of around 4,000 people.

“I really learned owning my own paper in a small community how valuable and important a connection between a publication and its community is,” Gauger tells the high school journalists.

Gauger told the students that on one occasion he could not find any information about the story he was running. When he told his boss, Gauger got a response that he would never forget. His boss told him, “Gauger, your job is to keep making calls until someone doesn’t say no.”

“I really learned owning my own paper in a small community how valuable and important a connection between a publication and its community is.”

The newspaper has meaning in people’s lives, Gauger said to the writers. He explained that journalists write for the people, not for themselves. He makes the example that if he only wrote about motorcycles, cars and bread, there would not be a large audience that would read his articles.

Gauger said that journalists should approach their work with care and with the consumer in mind. He told the LSPA students, “I’ve learned that at a weekly paper more than I was ever gonna learn it at a bigger name.”

Guttner and Mike the Tiger's unique fur real friendship

A woman and a tiger make an unlikely pair, until social media gets involved.

Communications manager for the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine Ginger Guttner and LSU’s mascot Mike the Tiger came together to portray the mascot on social media for fans in 2010 and since then have created an unbreakable bond.

Mike the Tiger is the mascot, but Guttner is the voice. Guttner runs an Instagram, Facebook and Twitter account all in the name of Mike. Since starting accounts on social media platforms in 2010, Mike the Tiger has gained over 221,000 followers.

The Louisiana Scholastic Press Association Summer Institute asked Guttner to come speak to the high school journalists about her job. When asked to describe the bond she has with Mike, she explained that she was closer to Mike VI than she is with Mike VII. Guttner felt that Mike VI truly knew who she was, and his death left her devastated.

Guttner told the LSPA student journalists that she sees different personalities in the tigers. She informed the writers of Mike’s favorite snacks of bacon, eggs, and goats’ milk. Mike also has a great sense of humor. One day when Guttner was visiting Mike, he decided to pee on her leg. Guttner told the writers,” If he turns his rear to you and lifts his tail, you better make lateral movements.”

Guttner said, “I don’t really like cats. I like one cat, and he’s four hundred pounds.”
