Plays

"Most of the great English playwright William Shakespeare's plays were first presented at the Globe" (Seidel).

Some of the first plays featured in this theater were that of Shakespear. They were considered 'great' and made their first appearance here.

"Plays were originally performed bu the all-male medieval trade guilds, so all women's parts were played by boys" (Anderson).

Woman were not allowed to partake in the theater, leaving the women's roles to the young males. This creates eye catching moments in plays, such as Romeo and Juliet.

"The King’s Men performed at the Globe during the summer" (Lander).

The King's Men were a group of highly skilled performers who were greatly favored in London. It is important to recognize their inclusion in the theater and the plays that took place, and how much it impacted the theater's success.

Design

"The theater may have held as many as 3,000 spectators. Its stage occupied the open-air space, with a pit in front for standing viewers. The stage was surrounded by several levels of seating" (Seidel).

The theater had space for a large audience, as expected, along with different seats depending on your social status. This design impacted the theater's popularity and affects in the plays.

"Trapdoors were placed in the floor of the main stage for the entrances and exits of ghosts and for descents into hell" (Anderson).

There were tools implemented into the theater's designs that enhanced the theater's performances and effects. This gives the theater style and helps attract more of an audience.

"...when Shakespeare's troupe produced them--without sets, decor, microphones or spotlights, or any of the techno-wizardry and theatrical prestidigitation now standard in even the most low-budget West End musical" (Covington).

During the reconstruction of the theater, they refused to upgrade the fashion of which the plays were put on. Instead, they stuck to how it was done in Shakespeare's time, ultimately portraying its significance in its previous time.

History

"17th-century London theatre , octagonal and open to the sky, near Bankside, Southwark, where many of Shakespeare's plays were performed by Richard Burbage and his company" ("Globe").

The theater put on many plays of Shakespeare within its walls. This helps his plays reach the spotlight and ultimately draw the attention of the audiences surrounding it.

"It was burned down after a cannon, fired during a performance of Henry VIII, set light to the thatch" ("Globe").

When an accident occurred during one of the theater's many shows, the roof set fire and tragedy struck. Unfortunate instances like this go down in history, especially the number of times the theater has burned.

Seidel, Michael. "Globe Theatre." World Book Advanced. World Book, 2016. Web. 17 Nov. 2016.

'The brothers Cuthbert and Richard Burbage constructed the theater in 1599 from the timbers of London's first playhouse, called The Theatre... erected the Globe in the area known as the Bank side on the south side of the River Thames in the suburb of Southwark...Shakespeare owned a modest percentage of the theater and its operations." (Seidel).

What was left of a previous theater was taken and constructed into a new theater, known as the Globe. Along with this, Shakespeare was a large influence on The Globe. With his brilliant plays and the dedication put into it, the theater stuck out.
