Portugal 28 April - 5 may 2017

We started our visit to Europe in 2017 in Portugal. We flew from London Gatwick to Faro in the south of Portugal, arriving early in the morning (around 9am). We parked our luggage at the train station and then walked through the town.

Faro is a pretty town. The south of Portugal is very popular with tourists - especially from England, but most of them go out to the beach resorts so Faro itself is quite unspoiled.

After a few hours in Faro we took the train to Lisbon. The ride is about 4 hours and cost 27 Euro each in first class - comfortable and quiet.

Lisbon took us completely by surprise. I had grown up knowing Portuguese people in South Africa, but nothing prepared us for the beauty of the city. The people are friendly even with thousands of tourists around all the time, the food is delicious and the sights are absolutely beautiful.

The first three nights we stayed in an apartment near the castle of S. Jorge - right at the top of the hill in one of the oldest parts of the city. This was a really great apartment - newly renovated and with a view to die for.

We've spent 4 days in Lisbon now and enjoying every minute of it. We moved to a different apartment for the next 4 days, so we will be in town for a total of 7 nights. We're walking a lot (a real lot!), buying food at the local markets and making dinner at home before going out for a stroll in the evening.

Right, that's it for now. We're going out for a stroll and some drinks after dinner - more photos in the next few days!
