Pitch For Your Project Case study #9

St Mary's Primary School

St Mary's Primary School's PTA consists of volunteer parents, teachers and staff. Their aim is to support St Mary's School through raising funds to: provide equipment, help facilitate the benefit, and support the advancement of the children’s education at St Mary's. St Mary's PTA also provides opportunities for the local community to come together through organising social events and providing the chance for families to get to know each other.

After coming across a study carried out Swansea University, showing that people benefit from outdoor learning in all areas of their life, the PTA group came together and decided to fundraise to provide the school with an outdoor classroom. The classroom will be used by pupils to enhance their learning experience, but also by the wider community. A prime example can be seen when looking at the residents of the local nursing home who meet there as part of the school's intergenerational work.

Through the application and Pitch video it was evident that the pupils, parents, teachers and the PTA are committed to the fundraising to turn the idea of an outdoor classroom into a reality.

We were delighted to help part fund this project as the panel felt that it would not only benefit the pupils by providing outdoor learning opportunities, but it would also help the pupils to grow their confidence, improve their wellbeing and provide opportunities for social interaction. St Mary's RC Primary School is increasingly opening its doors to the whole community and this played a big part in the panel’s decision to fund the project.

When the classroom is finished, we will be treated to a virtual tour, guided by some of the pupils that were part of the successful Pitch.

Quote from St Marys PTA

St Mary’s PTA is thrilled to have received funding through the MHA’s Pitch for Your Project scheme. We have been raising money for an outside classroom to offer pupils and local community groups using the school, the chance to learn outside and improve the mental and physical health and wellbeing of our community. Thank you for your support in making this dream a reality.

Quote from Alison Tenant on Panel

This will be great for the children and is something that once paid for will have no running costs so I think it is good value for money. My grandson loves to go outside with the Acorn Centre and it would be good for more children to have this opportunity and will teach the children about skills they might otherwise not learn.
