Cake Smash & Splash HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR SESSION

A cake smash session is a fun and joyful way to celebrate the biggest milestone in your little persons life. Their whole first year! Your baby is ONE!

What to Expect

Cake smash sessions last around 1 hour. The first 15 minutes of the session is comprised of letting baby get settled into the studio and taking some milestone images (milestone portraits are included in Package Two), one outfit and backdrop. The next 30 minutes is the cake smash. If you have booked Package One, we will look to start with the Cake smash set up straight away.) I begin by taking pictures of baby in their cake smash outfit before introducing the cake. Once we bring in the cake, I let baby set the pace, as some little ones need a little bit of encouragement and sometimes even help to get into their cake. Be ready to get your hands dirty and help your little one get past all that frosting to the cake underneath!

Choosing or making a cake

Select a small cake or 'giant' cupcake (or even lots of cupcakes!) Soft creamy frosting (buttercream) works best as it is easiest for babies to dig into and lovely and messy! Due to concerns for allergens, Puddle Lane Photography is not able to provide the cake. Whether you are making the cake, or having it made, please consider the following items: Please make sure that the cake is placed onto a cake round base (or something that can be used to transfer the cake easily from one surface to another) A piece of cardboard and covered with foil works just as well if you are making the cake yourself. Think 'light' colours for the cake itself (red cake smeared on baby's face tends to look like your baby just ate someone and chocolate tends to look like poop!) Remove the cake from the fridge 2-3 hours before the session to allow any frosting to come to room temperature.

What to wear

Choose the theme or colour of your little one's cake smash first, and then you can choose the outfit. Etsy and amazon/ ebay are great resources for buying custom made outfits to make your session memorable. Puddle Lane has a few cake smash basics, including some rompers, crown/ headbands. You are more than welcome to use any decorations I have in the studio if they match your theme. Please also let me know if you would like a complimentary balloon garland made.

The splash

I finish every session off with a dip in the tub for some bubbles and splashing! These photos are always my favourite! Please make sure to let me know if baby has sensitive skin and if so, if there are any specific bubble wash/ bath that you personally use at home, please bring that along with you.

The mess

I hope baby makes a huge mess! That's the whole point of the session, and most of the fun, so don't worry about any mess!

Things to bring

  1. Cake
  2. Cake smash outfit (for getting messy in)
  3. 1-2 Additional outfits for baby - one for milestone pictures (If Package Two), and something to go home in after bath!
  4. Towel
  5. Dummy/ soother (if used)
  6. A favourite soft toy
  7. Sippy cup of water/ milk to help wash down the cake
  8. Snacks (think cheerios, puffs) in case they don't like the cake. I sometimes have to hide them in the cake to make it look like baby is actually eating the cake! Shhhhh....if you dont tell, I wont! ;)
