City Council Approves Neighborhood & Environmental Protection Plan Ordinance Amendments

On Tuesday, the Laguna Beach City Council approved Ordinance Amendments to the City’s Municipal Code as part of the new Neighborhood & Environmental Protection Plan. Further readings of the ordinance were waived and passed to a second reading.

New Neighborhood & Environmental Protection Plan Ordinance Amendments:

  • Prohibit the use of plastic straws and single-use plastic containers on beaches and trails
  • Prohibit restaurant distribution of single-use to-go containers, plastic take-out bags and utensil sleeves
  • Prohibit the feeding of wild birds in City Parks
  • Prohibit use of large shade structures on beaches to preserve public safety sightlines
  • Prohibit storage of bicycles on Main Beach and Heisler Park
  • Expand prohibition of abandonment of personal property in public spaces
  • Change the operating hours of non-coastal community parks to close at 10:00 p.m.

City Council Approves Study of Permanent Promenade on Forest Design

At its meeting Tuesday, the Laguna Beach City Council unanimously approved moving forward with a contract for a design to make the Promenade on Forest pedestrian plaza a permanent fixture for the community. The contract consultant will prepare two Promenade design options for the City Council's future consideration - one with minimal improvements and one with more extensive improvements. Three future community meetings will be held to gather public input on the design, including interviews with community stakeholders.

New Music in the Park Partnership with the Festival of Arts

The City of Laguna Beach is making preparations to host its Music in the Park concert series at the Festival of the Arts grounds this summer, a partnership that was approved by the City Council on Tuesday. Live weekend music performances are also starting again at the Promenade on Forest beginning this weekend.

The Next Meeting of the Laguna Beach City Council is Tuesday, June 1.

City Council Honors Retiring Laguna Beach City Manager John Pietig

At its regular meeting Tuesday, the Laguna Beach City Council Honored retiring City Manager John Pietig for his 20 years of service to our community with a special proclamation.

Retiring City Manager John Pietig

John was presented with the special City Council Proclamation for his service, a special video created by staff and kind words from the City Council, Assistant City Manager Shohreh Dupuis and members of the public.

Shohreh Dupuis will become the new Laguna Beach City Manager on June 12.

Caltrans Culvert Replacement Project at Main Beach Nearing Completion

Thank You for Your Continued Patience During This Project!

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is nearing completion of work to replace the box culvert on Coast Highway at Main Beach. The project is on track to be completed before Memorial Day weekend!

This week: on Monday, May 17 Caltrans crews poured concrete for curbs, gutters, and sidewalk.

Upcoming Overnight Closure of Coast Highway:

  • Monday, May 24 from 8:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. to remove the temporary traffic control and to complete the final striping of the roadway.

Happening Next Week:

Following the full closure on Monday night, crews will be cleaning up and restoring the area before opening it up fully to the travelling public.

Caltrans Coast Highway Street Resurfacing Also Happening in South Laguna

One northbound lane of Coast Highway, between Seventh Avenue and the southerly City limits, will be closed from 8:00 p.m. on 5/24 until 8:00 p.m. on 5/25.

Today until 6:00 p.m., Cox is upgrading their existing equipment in the area between Park Avenue, Wendt Terrace, Legion Street and the coastline. Notices have been sent to affected residents. For more information, contact Todd Clay, Cox Customer Ambassador, at (949) 563-8342.
On May 26, between 4:00 a.m. at 5:00 a.m., SCE will be performing overhead wire work across North Coast Highway at Jasmine Street. Between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., SCE will close the alley between North Coast Highway, Chiquita Street and La Brea Street, to replace a utility pole. Next Thursday, May 27th, the Laguna Beach Police Department will be testing the Outdoor Warning System at 12:00 noon for National Wildfire Preparedness Month. This system of 21 speakers is strategically placed around the City to quickly alert and notify residents and visitors of critical time-sensitive information. The test will include a loud siren following by a recorded message.

Bushard's Pharmacy Mass COVID Vaccination Event This Sunday

Bushard's Pharmacy hopes to vaccinate as many as 500 people on Sunday, May 23 with the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine! The Pfizer vaccine is available for ages 12 and over.

Vaccinations will be given at the former Laguna Drug location at 239 Broadway.

Bushard’s Pharmacy also has appointments available for the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine on Tuesday & Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Laguna Beach Fire Department to Provide Upcoming COVID-19 Vaccine Assistance

The Laguna Beach Fire Department will provide Safety Paramedics to the Orange County Fairground COVID-19 Vaccine POD site on Saturday, May 22 and also provide assistance with vaccinations on Sunday, May 23 at the Bushard's Pharmacy vaccine location in Laguna Beach. Orange County Advances to Next Stage of Reopening

Entering the Yellow Tier Allows for Nearly All Businesses to Reopen Some or All Indoor Operations

Orange County moved into the Yellow Tier of the State's reopening guidelines this week - meaning most businesses in OC may now increase their operational capacity. Restaurantsgyms, churches, museums, and movie theatres may now increase indoor capacity to 50%.  Bars that do not serve meals may finally open indoors at 25% capacity, or 100 people, whichever is fewer.

Indoor malls may also reopen common areas under Yellow Tier. Most other retailers can continue operating with minor modifications.

What is Open?

  • Indoor dining: open at 50% capacity
  • Movie theaters: open at 50% capacity
  • Museums: open indoors with modifications (no cap)
  • Gyms and fitness centers: open indoors at 50% capacity, saunas and steam rooms may reopen
  • Stores: open indoors with modifications (no cap)
  • Malls: open indoors with modifications (no cap), food courts open at 50% capacity
  • Outdoor live events with assigned seating: open at 67% capacity
  • Indoor venues holding 0-1,500 people: open at 25% capacity or 300 people; if all guests are tested or show proof of full vaccination, capacity may increase to 50%

Maximum indoor capacities are dependent on business type and should be referenced in the Reopening Tier Guideline Chart and its corresponding capacity limits.

Free Drive-Thru Document Shredding and E-Waste Drop-off Event Saturday

Residents and businesses are invited to participate in the annual free Document Shredding and E-Waste Drop-off Event on Saturday, May 22, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or until trucks reach capacity.

The event will be held at the City Maintenance Facilities located at 1900 Laguna Canyon Road. There will be a limit of 10 standard file boxes per carload.

Successful Annual Compost Giveaway Event! On May 15, over 400 residents attended the City’s second Compost Giveaway event held this year. The City’s Arborist attended the event and provided helpful tips to residents. This event was sponsored by the City’s waste hauler, Waste Management.
