Expletive

Definition: A single word or phrase, that usually INTERRUPTS the normal speech, and also adds emphasis.

Example: The lask was not, in fact, in the exact spot taht the map showed.

Hypophora

definition: When a writer raises a question and then IMMEDIATELY answers it.

Exampe: You have enemies? Good; that meants you've stood for something sometime in your life.

Litotes

Definition: Understatement that uses a negation to express a positive.

Example: "You're not as young as you used to be." (You're old.)

Metaphor

Definition: Compares two subjects without using "like" or "as.

Example: The light flows into the bowl of the midnight sly.

Metonymy

Mi-TON-UH-MEE

dEFINITION: Replaces the name of an object with the name of something else closely related.

Examples: "The prince is the next heir to take the crown."
