Geroskipou is a village a few kilometers from Paphos on western side of Cyprus. I stay there about six weeks each year and I have an intention of making one thematic story each year, at least for a while.
The Sculpture Park is found close to the central square of Geroskipou.
The theme is «Myths and Sculptures» and was part of the exhibitions in the Paphos area in conjunction with the election of Paphos as European Capital of Culture in 2017.
Ten artists from Cyprus and abroad were chosen from an open call. All the work was done on site and started on 9th September 2017 and was completed on the 24th the same month.
The sculptures are made of local Cypriot stone, sourced from a quarry close to Limassol. The stone is like a limestone, but is quite hard and not smooth, and unlike granite and other materials often used.
“This is a way to bring the sculpture closer to history, as many of the antiquities used this stone,” said Katerina Foukara, the project coordinator, to Cyprus Mail on September 22nd 2017.
