The Year of Sasha Velour A reformation of drag, visual art & film in popular culture

As the season 9 winner of RuPaul's Drag Race, Sasha Velour (who reached 1.1M followers on Instagram this year) has continued to bring drag into the future at full-speed through performance, fashion, design and film, utilizing her platform to showcase queer, trans and non-binary drag performers from all backgrounds.

Before even taking the crown, Sasha was known as the producer and star of the monthly Brooklyn drag theatre show, Nightgowns, dedicated to exceptional drag performers of all kinds. This year, the show has grown tremendously at National Sawdust in Brooklyn and for the first time, travelled to packed houses in both Los Angeles and London, exposing thousands of fans to forms of drag not seen on TV.

Sasha co-founded Velour in 2015, a magazine that celebrates the art of drag through visual art, poetry, and interviews. Now with 3 issues and a collected hardcover book, the magazine has become a staple in the queer art world.

Named a "New American Monarch" by NPR

"A lot of people still have the idea that drag goes from one end of the gender spectrum to the other end of the gender spectrum, and they expect drag queens to be masculine out of drag and hyper-feminine in drag. I think that portrays a lot of binary thinking and ultimately a lot of misogyny. I hope people appreciate that drag always has been more about the blurriness of gender rather than these two extremes." - Sasha Velour on NPR, June 2017
